47 Cm Rains In 24 hours Talala Saurashtra
Floods and heavy rains have engulfed Gujarat completely; heavy crop loss and
property damage is expected. One place received 47 CM in 24 hours, Junagarh
received 30 centimeters in four hours.

But press and GoG are not covering the developments probably because no VIP is involved in rescue efforts waiting for clouds to disperse so that their choppers could operate and they get clear view and pictures of flood damage.

You can see dense clouds have moved away to Karachi now, Pakistan. In a day or two politicians will do their duty.

Dalits in News

Dear friends,

"The Federation of SC and ST has threatened that its leaders will commit suicide in front of the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the second week of September in protest against the organised moves involving the Central Government, to include the minorities in the Scheduled Castes list. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, federation general secretary K K Krishnan Kutty said that both the Central and State Governments had meted out ill-treatment to them."

Well, the report given above does not state what argument Mr. KK Krishna Kutty was giving for his assertion that "both the Central and State Governments had meted out ill-treatment to them (SC/ST)". I suppose, he was probably suggesting that both Christians as well as Muslims contained segments within them (better off within these religions) that were, statistically speaking, much better educated, than those among the SC/ST categories (the better off SC/ST castes). As such, the better off among Muslims and Christians would run away with most of the jobs and seats in colleges that are currently going to the better off SC/ST castes. However, they cannot deny the fact that the lower castes at least among Muslims are worse off than the lower among the SC/ST castes (Sachchar report). In view of the latter situation, blanket opposition of the Federation of SC and ST (FSCST) appears to be immoral and inimical towards solidarity of the oppressed.

So, what is the solution to the above dilemma? It's rather simple! We should have sub-quotas within quotas, as far as practicable. For example, suppose SC reservation is 15%. Suppose Muslim castes totaling 5% belong to SC-Muslim and 3% are OBC-Muslims. Best way of integrating Muslims into SC category would be to add 8% to the new reserved quota for SCs, bringing the total to 23%. However, at the same time, keep 5% sub-quota for OBC-Muslims and 3% for SC-Muslims. With the creation of these sub-quotas, there would be no need for hair-splitting speculation about whether the OBC and SC Muslims are ahead of other SCs. The latter would have no reason to be apprehensive regarding loss of jobs and seats to the former (OBC & SC-Muslims). In fact, increase in the size of SC category as a whole would increase our political strength.

Why can't the Federation of SC and ST see the simple solution offered above? My suspicion is that the leaders of FSCST belong to the better off SC/ST castes, and they are opposed to creation of sub-quotas within the broad quotas of SC/ST. Currently the castes that are better off among SC/ST (roughly upper half of the SC/ST categories) are able to capture the whole quota for SC/ST. Creation of sub-quotas would enable the lower half to get its own share and limit the upper half to its own half. This is unpalatable to the hypocritical leaders of the better off SC/ST categories. If these selfish leaders could get out of their duplicity and threaten suicide for an unselfish cause outlined above, they could invoke greater amount of sympathies and compassion!

SC/ST federation to undertake ?suicide mission? in Delhi http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp? ID=IEX20070807010724&Title=Kochi&rLink=0 Tuesday August 7 2007 11:28 IST KOCHI: The Federation of SC and ST has threatened that its leaders will commit suicide in front of the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the second week of September in protest against the organised moves involving the Central Government, to include the minorities in the Scheduled Castes list. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, federation general secretary K K Krishnan Kutty said that both the Central and State Governments had meted out ill-treatment to them. ??The governments are ignoring the SC and ST community and the latest example is the move by the Central Government to pass a Bill in Parliament to give Christians and Muslims the rights enjoyed by SC/STs, thereby, sidelining the already suffering community,?? he said. The reports of Justice Ranganatha Misra and Justice Rajinder Sachar were to cover up this move of the Central Government, the leaders said. The federation will take out a vehicle rally from Kasargod to gather support for the ?suicide mission? they are going to undertake in New Delhi .

Muslim lawmakers attack Taslima Nasreen

HYDERABAD, India (Reuters) - Muslim protesters assaulted the exiled Bangladeshi author and feminist Taslima Nasreen at a book launch in Hyderabad on Thursday, incensed by her repeated criticism of Islam and religion in general. Some radical Muslims hate Nasreen for saying Islam and other religions oppress women. On Thursday, lawmakers and members of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party attacked her at the press club in Hyderabad at the launch of a Telugu translation of one of her novels. An uneasy-looking Nasreen backed into a corner as several middle-aged men threw a leather case, bunches of flowers and other objects at her head and threatened her with a chair, according to a Reuters witness and television pictures. Some of the mob shouted for her death. Other men tried to shield her and catch the projectiles. She ended up with a bruised forehead, and described the attack as barbaric before being taken to safety by police. Nasreen fled Bangladesh for the first time in 1994 when a court said she had "deliberately and maliciously" hurt Muslims' religious feelings with her Bengali-language novel "Lajja", or "Shame", which is about riots between Muslims and Hindus. At the time, thousands of radical Muslims protested against her, demanding that she be killed for blasphemy, and some have continued to threaten her life ever since. Police said they have arrested three state lawmakers from the political party along with 15 party workers. Nasreen - sometimes spelled "Nasrin" - was born into a Muslim family in Bangladesh, a conservative, predominantly Islamic country. The author, who lives in Kolkata, now describes herself as a secular humanist, and criticises religion as an oppressive force. In 2004, a Muslim cleric offered a $440 reward to anyone who was able to successfully humiliate Nasreen by blackening her face with shoe polish or ink or by garlanding her with shoes. She worked as a doctor before turning to writing, and several of her books have been banned in India and Bangladesh because they upset hardline Muslims. The European Parliament awarded her the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought in 1994.

Rape Chamber Of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh ? CBI Case
It is shameful story of how a dubious DERA head exploited women. This is a
3-4 years old case. Last governments didn?t expedite investigation in Haryana
and Punjab and all politicians lined before him seeking votes of his followers.

Sadhvi recounts ordeal at Dera den

     Sanjay Sharma | TNN TOI August09, 2007 Delhi P-16

Chandigarh: One of the sadhvis who alleged that she was raped by Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has provided graphic details of the harrowing time she had and described how the inner chamber (gufa) of the Dera chief looks like.

The sadhvi has said in a statement recorded before a magistrate in Chandigarh that as soon as she entered the gufa, doors automatically closed and she found Rahim watching a pornographic movie on a big TV screen in a sprawling room. The girl described the baba?s special bed and placement of ACs in the den. CBI is banking heavily on this statement as only a select few have access to that chamber.

The woman said he raped her thrice one night and threatened to eliminate her brother when she told him she would spill the beans. The agency then asked her to draw a sketch of the gufa and later matched it with statements of two other women victims. A few of those held in the murder cases against the Dera chief also gave details of the gufa which matched with the ones provided by the sadhvi.

In all, 130 sadhvis in the Dera and 18 who deserted the sect were quizzed by CBI. Two of the 18 said they?d been raped and almost all from this group said the Dera had ??dangerous people?? and they feared for their lives.
