Dr. Joseph D’ Souza, the President of aicc said: “Aicc congratulates the people of Hyderabad who have showed boldness and empathized with the victims. We request all Churches to continue to pray for the victims and for the loved ones of those that lost their lives. We applaud the many Churches which prayed publicly on Sunday, 26th August 2007.” Dr. Sam Paul cautioned, “Terrorism breeds more terrorism. The attacks leaves a lot of innocent people as easy prey for some kind of terrorist ideology that would encourage them to take vengeance. As the Government punishes the terrorists severely, it also must ensure that all forms of terrorism should be eradicated. The organizations that spread hate against minorities should be monitored closely for their anti-social speeches and actions, that ultimately breed terrorism. These groups include the RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and the BJP.” The All India Christian Council (www. aiccindia. org), birthed in 1998, exists to protect and serve the Christian community, minorities, and the oppressed castes. The aicc is a coalition of thousands of Indian denominations, organizations, and lay leaders. If it has any survival instinct, Congress would thank the Left for all the confrontations and arm-twisting of the last three years. If it has any political judgment, Congress should grab with both hands the opportunity that the Left threatens to offer. In the last three years, the Congress-Left relationship has followed an unwritten 'Yeh dosti' script: the Left has been more loyal to Congress ideology, more mindful of the Congress manifesto and ever more keen to protect the political base of Congress than their own party leaders. This led to differences and tensions. But as any filmi dialogue would remind you, pyaar (love) always comes with takraar (conflict). In hindsight, these pressures — whether on NREGA or farmers' suicides or RTI — helped preserve the political constituency of Congress and saved it from the Shining India trap that a section of its leadership and the market fundamentalists were pushing it into. Thus the Left was performing a function that used to be performed by a faction within the Congress. It would be hard to claim that this government has made much difference to the life of the aam aadmi, but if it appears to be less distanced from the common man than it would have been on its own, it must thank the Left. If there were no Left, the Congress would have to invent one. To be sure, this is not what the Left wanted to do. Helping the Congress would be the last thing on Prakash Karat's mind. The Left parties were like others playing their own calculated games, and not always ideological ones. Congress happened to benefit from these. No doubt, the Left used its clout for sections other than the poor as well. Its stand on PF and pension reforms and airport privatisation was calculated to protect the vested interests of the salaried workers in the public sector and not the aam aadmi. As a rule they did not quite practise in Kerala and West Bengal what they preached to the Congress at the Centre. The Left's choice of a foreign policy issue rather than economic policy to force the biggest showdown so far also reflects this. It is easier to afford ideological purity on issues of imperialism since the governments of West Bengal and Kerala are not required to frame their foreign policies. The point here is not the ethical and ideological propriety of what the Left did. What matters most in politics are not the intentions of the players but the consequences of their actions. Let us consider the consequences of mid-term elections. A back-of-the-envelope calculation can give a broad outline of the verdict in the next elections: in all likelihood CPM and BJP, the two parties that are gunning for the government, are going to be the biggest losers. You don't need to be a political wizard to see that the Left is highly unlikely to repeat its extraordinary performance in 2004. Even if Singur and Nandigram do not cost it many seats in West Bengal, the open faction fight in Kerala's CPM is unlikely to allow it to retain its bounty of 2004. Again, just a cursory glance at the electoral contest in some of the major states is enough to see why the NDA is bound to shrink. The BJP faces major electoral reversals in the four states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat where it won 70 seats in 2004. The small gains it may make in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar cannot possibly make up for this loss, unless the party bounces back to its old strength in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP's current allies cannot improve very much; those like the TDP and AIADMK who can improve are no longer with the BJP. Part of the gains would go to the Third Front formation that currently calls itself UNPA. But these parties cannot conceivably be so big as to lead the government formation. In all likelihood, the biggest beneficiary of the next elections will be the Congress, not because the UPA govern-ment has done anything to deserve it but because the state-level arithmetic happens to favour the ruling party. The Congress and its allies may fall short of the magic number, yet the Congress may well be able to formalise its existing understanding with BSP to make up the deficit. Thus the Left would have only succeeded in ejecting itself from the pivotal position that it enjoys in the current Lok Sabha. A true filmi sacrifice except that the story has one more twist. Just consider the long-term consequences: The Left brings the government down for its pro-American policy, leading to mid-term elections. A few weeks into the election campaign, pro- or anti-Americanism gets overtaken by routine, state-level issues. When Congress improves its tally at the expense of the NDA and the Left, everyone concludes that this is a mandate for pro-American foreign policy. If this happens, it would not be the first time when an ideologically correct move ends up achieving the opposite of what it set out to. The communist dictionary has a word for it: it is called 'Left adventurism'. The writer is senior fellow, CSDS. ------------ [9] From: Regi P George <george_regi@yahoo.com Date: Mon Aug 27, 2007 Subject: Onam Dear All Today, this Onam Morning I wish you a very happy Onam. My Greeting and Salutes to the celebrations. And same time I am bit sadly finds no reason for us to celebrate another Onam coming Years. Because Prior to Maveli’s Visit to Kerala this year Pentagon advised him to visit Bill Gates and take his advise on suing Vamana in UN against the age old Treaty. Of course we all know this is the time of suing against old treaty’s and agreements. On Mullapperiyar Dam we are suing Pattali Makkal Kachi; On Selam Division we are suing Thirunavaukkarasu. On one, two, three Manmohan sued against the left support to his Job. Mahabali is trying to revise the old treaty with Vamana Bhagawanji and Mahabaliji have a very genuine Idea on providing the 3rd foot space to Vamana as per the same old treaty. He doesn’t want to break the law but very generously he wants to deal with Vamana. He wanted Vamana to step into Windows for the third foot space instead of stepping on his head down to the endless pit. Last night He celebrated Onam in NewYork under the ban ki Moon. (Patent Pending) condolesa Rise and john Curry he enjoyed every much; before leaving for Kerala he enjoyed the patent free Coffee annan and explain to all UN members his Idea of showing Vamana space for the third foot. Once Vamana step into the Windows for the third foot space; Bill Gates will open up the windows towards the www world as per the pentagon special request. This all episode is nothing but White House advice to find a new ruler for Iraq only. And now a day Mahabali rethinking on the idea of staying back in Pathalam. He is bit upset with the decision of George W. Bush’s retirement plan. Finally He accepted Bill Gates Idea of Living in Iraq and leaving Pathalam before G. W. Bush moving. NB: As per Pentagon advice he completed his basic computer course on last Onam visit; but McaFee and Norton not providing any protection in Pathalam. No bulk box facility available in Pathalam but unlimited storage possible. Regi. ------------ [10] From: Regi P George <george_regi@yahoo.com Date: Mon Aug 27, 2007 Subject: Grave Crisis Over India-US Nuclear Deal India is now witnessing the most vicious attack on the Left since the 1962 China War. Every Tom, Dick and Harry in the media--from semi-literate television anchors, to former intelligence spooks, to pitiable third-edit writers--is unleashing vitriolic anti-Communist assaults. This new McCarthyism betrays malignant intolerance. Such intolerance can only have dangerous consequences for public debate. If every dissenting opinion is attributed to the "foreign hand" by suppressing its rational content, and if every difference on principle is reduced to an "ego clash" between personalities, there can be no rational discourse on policy issues. That does not bode well for Indian democracy. It's simply undeniable that the Indian Left represents the most important current driven by ideology and principle in politics, which perhaps concentrates more brainpower per capita than any other party. Sitaram Yechury for Furthering India's "Strategic Programme"? "If we are wrong in our position taken on the deal, tell us on the basis of facts but do not say that we are acting in the interest of China. This nuclear deal seeks to cap our strategic programme and it has been done by this government. Both the previous NDA regime and the current UPA government have tried to cap India's strategic programme and who stands to benefit from it, obviously China and Pakistan? So who is acting in the interest of China? Certainly, not our party," Mr. Yechury said. http://www.hindu.com/2007/08/25/stories/2007082559800100.htm ------------- |
