Bhopal: A bonhomie atmosphere prevailed at the valedictory function organised by Umang Women Vocational Education & Training Institute under the Gharib Nawaz Foundation for Education, (GNFE), here on Saturday to present certificates to the students at the conclusion of vocational training course conducted for girls and women in the trades of Zardozi, artificial jwellery and cutting & tailoring.

The member secretary of GNFE, S. H. Khan, who presided over the function, said his aim is to wipe out illiteracy and provide vocational education to the Muslims so that they could stand on their feet and not become burden on society. He exhorted the students to become good human beings first to spread message of love so as to refurbish the image of Muslim community, which has been much defamed, before starting their own ventures.

New Delhi, August 27: Some Naxal link is also possible in the twin bomb blasts in Hyderabad, says a report of leading New Delhi based television channel NDTV. An NDTV report says that the investigators probing the blasts that killed 42 people Saturday in the city have sufficient ground to look into a Naxal involvement into the twin blasts.

Subject: Do we know America and China well enough?

Do we know America and China well enough?

For almost half a century, we remained non-aligned. We thought that we could avoid paying the price for other peoples’ folly. But we did pay a heavy price for our non-alignment. And got no thanks for our sacrifices.

Ours has been a case of love-hate relation with America. I do not know why. We have a pro-US lobby in this country. It serves largely US interests. And we have the Left lobby (Communists) which hates America and serves Chinese interests.

My answer is No. Which is why we have crisis after crisis in our relations with them.

India is a great power. We should know the world better. And also know how to play our part.

For almost half a century, we remained nonaligned. We thought that we could avoid paying the price for other peoples’ folly. But we did pay a heavy price for our non-alignment. And got no thanks for our sacrifices.

The end of the Cold War and the debacle of the Soviet Union brought us closer to America. But America was in no need of a non-aligned country. It was determined to deny us a role in the world. So when we exploded a bomb, it was an affront to the United States. For us, it was the firm demonstration of our self-assertion. There was no going back after that. No government in this country can give up our nuclear option.

The phenomenal growth of China altered the global situation. It was no more possible for Washington to contain China on its own. So it turned an adversity into an opportunity.

China was eager to break its isolation in the world, get into the American market and secure advanced technology. And America needed China’s cheap goods. In a world of rising prices, China alone could keep prices down. This was possible because it has control of the economy. This was America’s opportunity. In fact, Clinton had said: “US relation with China will determine whether the new century will be one of security, peace and prosperity for the American people.” That is the importance of China to the USA.

But America is cautious. China is no “Bhai-Bhai” to Washington. Which is why it is seeking an alliance (an Asian NATO) of nations of Asia against China. It wants India in it to make it more meaningful.

But India has never played these global games. Which is why it chose to remain non-aligned. We cannot get out of this tradition unless we re-learn our history. But that is another story.

Ours has been a case of love-hate relation with America. I do not know why. We have a pro-US lobby in this country. It serves largely US interests. And we have the Left lobby (Communists) which hates America and serves Chinese interests.

As I said before, India cannot replace China. But it can open up its markets for America. This is the price we are paying for the little considerations that Washington has been showing of late. Of course, this is too high a price.

For about 30 years or so, India has been an outcast to America. It has tried to block all our efforts to be a nuclear power. We have been denied dual-use technologies. But India has gone out of its way to keep its doors open to America.

The BJP government of Atal Behari Vajpayee changed all that, thanks to Jaswant Singh. Vajpayee even called America a “natural ally”. It was this change in attitude which set in motion the negotiations for a new strategic relationship.

Then what is it that made the Communists reject the deal? It is because of Chinese pressure. Nothing else would bend the CPM. Had it not been for Chinese pressure, there was nothing which could have persuaded CPM to bring down the government. In any case, the communists are never known to have pursued India’s national interests.

After the debacle of the Soviet Union and the decimation of communism throughout the world, the Indian communists had been lying low. But, of late, they have found their way back to the thick of Indian politics, thanks to the coalition compulsions…. of some parties. And the first thing they did was to object to India’s closer relations with America.

Of course, no one thought that the negotiations would succeed. But when it did succeed, Beijing knew that history was turning against it. Hence the obduracy.

Let us be clear on this: China can never be a friend of India, nor can it allow India to emerge as a great power. But America can be a friend also to help India.

Patna: Madrasa Madinat-ul Islam is just like any other Madarsa in India. But a few students make this Madarsa different and very special. These students are Ashish Vidyarthi and Hemlata. They are the children of Mr. Dilip Kumar Chaudhury, an Indian Railway employee.

Ashish is 6-years-old and Hemlata is 9-years-old. They are studying the Holy Quran and the Urdu language at Madarsa Madinat-ul-Islam. It is situated in Khagaul, near Danapur Railway Station, Patna, Bihar. They are also studying in a local English medium School. Hemlata is studying in class IV and Ashish in class I. Their hectic schedule begins in the early hours of the morning. They return from school by 1 pm and after short break they head to the Madarsa immediately. They complete their studies in Madarsa by 4 pm. Their school teachers have pointed out to Mr. Chadhuri that the Madarsa education will put extra burden on Hemlata and Ashish. Mr. Chaudhri's reply to the teachers was that any suffering in search of knowledge should be appreciated.

Bihar man ostracized for refusing to give wife to rich man

[IANS Monday, August 27, 2007 at 23:14] Patna: A poor landless labourer and his family have been ostracised in a Bihar village for his refusal to hand over his wife to a rich man. Rudo Mandal, 40, and his wife Sushila Devi, 30, have been forced to go hungry along with their six children after they were threatened with dire consequences by the henchmen of the person who demanded the worker to give him his wife. "First they demanded that I hand over my wife and when I refused they ostracised us and threatened to eliminate us," Mandal, a labourer in Haripur village under Daghmdaha block in Purnea district, about 300 km from here, said Monday. Mandal along with his wife and children met the Purnea district superintendent of police, seeking security for the family. "We have informed the SP about the threat to our lives and sought security," he said. Sushila Devi said they have been running from pillar to post for justice, but to no avail. "We were socially ostracised for trying to protect our honour," she said. Mandal was denied work in the village under the orders of the rich man. The villager said he and his family had met Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at his Janata durbar or public meet a few weeks ago. "We were promised justice, but nothing has happened so far," he said. The family was planning to migrate from Bihar if they failed to get justice. Mandal's case is not an isolated one. There are several such instances in rural Bihar where powerful landed people still behave like feudal lords of the past. NO JUSTICE: The family met Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, but didn't get justice.
