The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has passed without discussion in their General Body a scheme to “re-develop” Crawford Market which will wreck this heritage precinct and gift away over Rs. 1,050 crores to a particular developer. All city markets may be “re-developed” in similar fashion and deprive you and me of a phenomenal Rs. 6,000 crores.

Two queries:

Where did this article originally appear? Why is that information not revealed?

Who is Mr Niranjan Shah? (Apart from the linkages obvious through the tone of the article it is necessary to know sources of his information and credibility of his 'research'.)

Sri Lanka: ‘Gently Weeps’ By Chandi Sinnathurai

http://www.countercurrents.org/sinnathurai231107.htm

The questions that need to be raised by all who care for human rights is this: How long can this denial of justice continue? How much more time is needed for the world community to sit quietly and watch, and even supply arms under-hand for such an immoral act to continue?

"3'D' In Judiciary " By Amit Chamaria

http://www.countercurrents.org/chamaria231107.htm

Apart from other anomalies, the word 'delay' has become part and parcel of the Indian judicial system. A close scrutiny of the above data that the 3 ' D' are restricted to that segments of the society who are socially backward in all dimensions of the life and at the bottom line of the social hierarchy of the Varna system. And certainly, Dalits and Adivasi prominently fall in this category

Subject: US daily calls Musharraf a terrorist (San Francisco Chronicle)

*US daily calls Musharraf a terrorist*
23 Nov 2007, 0320 hrs IST, Chidanand Rajghatta, TNN

WASHINGTON: To the Bush administration, he's a democrat, a visionary, and a loyal ally in the war on terror. To an ever-widening phalanx of critics, he is a ''thug,'' a ''sonofabitch,'' and now, a ''terrorist.''

As Pakistan's military dictator, ''president-elect'' Pervez Musharraf strengthened his hold on power with help from a supreme court stacked with loyalists, both the General and his patrons in Washington are coming in for a withering attack from foreign policy analysts who remain unconvinced about their roadmap for the embattled country.

Musharraf expelled three British journalists from Pakistan after their newspaper called him a ''sonofabitch,'' but now he might have to get the American media in the line of fire. In one extreme case, a California daily has referred to him as a ''terrorist,'' attributing the epithet to critics.

''Washington hails Musharraf as an ally in the war on terror, but critics make a case that Pakistani leader is a terrorist,'' the San Francisco Chronicle said in an introduction to an article headlined Friend or Foe - a common enough headline in the US about Pakistan.

The critics it referred to are Adrian Levy and Catherine Scott-Clark, co-authors of a new book on Pakistan's nuclear proliferation and blackmail. Dismissing the Bush administration's proposition that Musharraf is an ally in the war on terror, the duo traces the former commando's career in furthering terrorism in Afghanistan, India, and elsewhere.

''He (Musharraf) has always given the impression that he and his troops are Western-leaning moderates. However, the real Musharraf is far more complicated, and a good deal of the time we have paid the General to stand by us, he has been cosseting the forces that are bent on undermining the West,'' they write.

It is a common refrain in the US, where many analysts point relentlessly to Musharraf's dark side of siding with extremists and fundamentalists at the expense of moderate forces, even as the administration certifies his indispensability in the war on terror.

Musharraf is also getting burnt on the Internet, a medium moderate Pakistanis have adopted vigorously to get around the emasculation of print and television in the country. One video posted on You Tube is a song titled ' Ek Sala General in which a critic savages the military rule in Pakistan.

''Ek General sala poori fauj ko hijra bana deta hain... Ek General sala poori kaum ko hijra bana deta hain,'' the sing begins (loosely: One damn General turns the whole army into eunuchs)

Commentators have not been kind to Bush either. One termed his administration ''American Gangsters'' --after a recent movie -- and referring to Bush's praise of Musharraf, said it ''has had no compunction at all about promoting the taunts and threats of the very terrorists they pretend to be pursuing.''

While military dictatorships, and US penchant for backing despots, have been pilloried in the past, seldom has the language and discourse descended to this level.

In fact, there are almost no takers now for the Bush policy of backing Pakistan's military ruler. Analysts, including former administration officials, greeted Bush's remarks certifying Musharraf as a democrat with incredulity. '

'Victory for Bush's favourite Democratic general'' one headline sneered after Thursday's court verdict in Islamabad.

Even partisans who have long held that Pakistan's military is a stabilising force are now concluding that Musharraf has outlived his promise. But evidently, the word hasn't reached the White House yet, where the person who matters most in Musharraf's scheme of things continues to believe he's the man.

Press Release

Association of Indian Minorities unequivocally condemns the violent Bomb blasts at the Court premises at Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Acts of violence cannot be justified in any circumstances. The policy of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth will make us all blind and toothless. We believe that the use of violence as a tool results from compulsive behavioral disorder.

The entire matter needs to be investigated impartially and inferences drawn without analyzing the matter will also act as a detriment to free and fair investigations. The truth needs to come to light. The Media both print and electronic need to act very responsibly. Needless to mention that the media needs to be appreciated for acting very responsibly. The Media is aware that one biased report may result in undue sufferings for thousands of Indian citizens.

The Association appeals for peace and harmony at this hour of grief and stands with the victims of the blasts irrespective of religious or caste considerations. The victims of violence need to be compensated adequately.

Regards Md Habibur Rehman Chairman Association of Indian Minorities.

All India Minorities Forum is hardly all over India or represent all minorities but its president Mr. Idris Ali has claimed his 15 minutes of fame by calling a protest demonstration that lead to violence in Kolkata. It may be the first time in history that Indian Army was called to do a flag march to quell violence where there was no loss of life and that too in a matter of hours. Idris Ali is advocate by profession and knows how to get his names printed in newspapers by filing public interest litigations. Over the years he has raised emotive issues to appear to be leader of Muslims of Kolkata and West Bengal.

Taslima Nasrin sent to Jaipur

Marcus Dam

‘I have no place to go, India is my home’

Taslima Nasrin

KOLKATA: The controversial Bangladeshi author, Taslima Nasrin, arrived in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on Thursday after having been escorted out of Kolkata by police.

On Wednesday, protesters belonging to the All-India Minority Forum indulged in violence here demanding the cancellation of her visa.

“The Kolkata police has been advising me to leave the city on grounds of my security, and I was brought here as it was felt that I would be safe here,” Ms. Nasrin told The Hindu over telephone from Jaipur. The author said she had been put up in “a private place.”

“I have no place to go. India is my home, and I would like to keep living in this country till I die,” Ms. Nasrin said. “Here, in this country, I have got the love and sympathy of the people for which I am grateful.”

Ms. Nasrin’s visa, which was renewed by the government of India in August, expires on February 17, 2008.

‘Special place for Kolkata’

“I have a special place in my heart for Kolkata and hope that I can get back. I do not believe that Kolkata is a place for fundamentalists even though some hooligans had been incited by a handful of them to create violence there on Wednesday,” Ms. Nasrin said. “It is the spirit of Kolkata that I applaud. It is a progressive city where the people believe in secularism.”

Kolkata “has become my home” and its “people speak the language I write in.”

‘Nothing against Islam’

“As for my works, never have I written anything against the Islam religion. They are all about the sad plight of women in our society,” Ms. Nasrin said.
