Press Release

Pastor Beaten in Bihar then Arrested on False Charges

New Delhi, December 12, 2007 (All India Christian Council)

A pastor was beaten on December 1, 2007, by unknown assailants in Dandkora village, Katihar District, Bihar. Police put him behind bars after making a false allegation and then requiring a bribe for his release.

On December 1 around 10 a. m., a group of five attackers, believed to be from a local Muslim community, came to Pastor Munil's (name changed) house and beat him severely with bamboo sticks. He suffered deep cuts on his hands and had five stitches, a source told the All India Christian Council (AICC).

Pastor Varghese, a friend of the victim, reported to the AICC that, while still bleeding, Pastor Munil went to lodge a complaint in the local police station.

Instead of protecting the victim, Pastor Munil was taken into police custody and released the next day after bribing the local police, said Pastor Varghese.

Until now, the police have not registered a First Information Report (FIR) and no action has been taken to arrest the culprits.

Pastor Munil comes from a Muslim background and is the pastor of a Good Shepherd Community Church in Dandkora village, said Pastor Varghese. Both Pastor Munil and his sick wife are traumatized.

His wife is suffering from a stone in her gall bladder, and a doctor has advised her to go for an operation within a month. They do not have money to cover the medical expenses.

The All India Christian Council (www. aiccindia. org), birthed in 1998, exists, to protect and serve the Christian community, minorities, and the oppressed castes. The aicc is a coalition of thousands of Indian denominations, organizations, and lay leaders.

Parliament attack victim's wife embarrasses PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] apparently faced embarrassing moments on Thursday when an inconsolable kin of a 2001 Parliament terror attack victim accused the government of not fulfilling the promises made to her.

A tearful Vimla Devi, wife of ASI Nanak Chand, who was killed in the 2001 terrorist attack, turned up at a function that was also attended by Leader of the Opposition L K Advani and Home Minister Shivraj Patil to pay tributes to the martyrs.

Narrating her woes, she told the function in Parliament that she was yet to get land for a petrol pump, which had been allotted to her as part of compensation following the killing of her husband.

"We do not want all these tributes to be paid. I do not have anything. Nobody listens to us," she said.

As Vimla Devi was escorted out, Swaraj later told media persons that the leaders spoke to the Home Minister who assured them that the process of relief and rehabilitation of the victims' families would be completed by next year.

"She is saying that she has not got anything. We have demanded that wherever there is any gap, it should be filled," the BJP leader said, adding that it was a matter of great concern that the families were still facing problems even six year after the Parliament attack case.

The function was also attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Union Ministers A K Antony and P R Dasmunsi, Congress lawmaker Rahul Gandhi [Images] and BJP lawmakers Sushma Swaraj, V K Malhotra and Jaswant Singh. A total of six Delhi Police personnel, one gardener and five terrorists were killed in the attack.

PAKISTAN CHURCH LEADER KIDNAPPED, 3+ CHRISTIANS DIE IN CROSSFIRE

Source: BosNewsLife

The whereabouts of Rejinald Humayun, general secretary of the churches of Pakistan, are unknown after he was kidnapped last week following clashes involving Islamic militants that left at least three Christians dead. The All Pakistan Minority Alliance (APMA), the diocese of the Church of Pakistan and other Christian leaders urged Pakistan’s government “to expedite efforts for the safe recovery of Dr. Rejinald.” The church official was kidnapped Friday, Dec. 7, while on his way from the city of Bannu in Pakistan’s troubled North-West Frontier province to Dera Ghazi Khan, a large city in neighboring Punjab province. It came as another setback for the missionary community as Humayun was the medical superintendent at Bannu Christian Hospital. Witnesses said at least three Christians were recently killed in crossfire between the Pakistani military and militants since last month in the area where individual believers and churches have received death threats from extremists. The Christians, who were only identified as Waheed, Gulzar and Raja, were returning from work Friday, Nov. 16, in the Kabler area when they were shot on the road to Mingora, the largest city in the Swat Valley.

Subject: Congratulations it's a boy!

By Puneet Bedi, IANS

It was not an Ekta Kapoor serial this time but Dr Mangla Telang, a Delhi gynaecologist looking at the ultrasound in a BBC report. She is shown offering an illegal sex determination and promising to do the needful if it was a girl, with the nonchalance of a surgeon talking about removing a wart or a mole. The nation is disgusted but not furious. Foeticide does not cause the public outrage we saw in the Nithari killings or in the Jessica Lal and Priyadarshini Mattoo murders. Perhaps because the killing is before birth, or maybe we have accepted this genocide as doom.

For decades, social scientists and medical politicians have been telling us that foeticide occurs because people want sons. If by not wanting daughters, girls could be eliminated, women would have disappeared from our society long ago. Women have survived violence in the form of infanticide, girl child neglect, early marriages, domestic violence, rape and even sati for thousands of years. All these are called social evils and not crimes!

The unborn female however has no chance against direct violence perpetrated by her own parents and the medical profession. Couples want a son and pay for sex determination and if it is a girl, they give a contract (supari) to kill her. In both these steps, a doctor makes money. This is done with clinical precision; the cruelty is being lost in this discourse and the right to be born is denied to these girls. Thus the 'social evil' theory is over-simplistic. Euphemisms like sex selection and family balancing trivialise this genocide. Over six million girls are dead in the last two decades and the nation wants to know who killed them.
