Muslims in Indian economy: interview with Dr. Omar Khalidi <http://www.twocircles.net/2007dec14/muslims_indian_economy_interview_dr_omar_kh\ alidi. html

<http://www.twocircles.net/2007dec14/muslims_indian_economy_interview_dr_omar_kh\ alidi. html Dr. Omar Khalidi is the author of well-researched book 'Muslims in Indian Economy.' This book is a study of conditions of Muslims at all levels of economic ladder and from Muslim dynasties to the post-independent India. Editor of TwoCircles. net Kashif-ul-Huda interviewed him recently about Muslims in Indian economy from past to present.

TCN: What was the status of Muslims under 'Muslim-ruled' India?

OK: At that time Muslims were divided into three groups economically. One was the family of the ruler or the ruling dynasty members at the top of the pyramid. After that was the group consisting of courtiers, landlords, and jagirdars etc. This second group had most wealth, they had land ownership and other resources. The third group at the bottom is where majority of Muslims were. These were peasants, craftsmen, lower rungs of soldiers. So in other words just because Muslims dynasties were ruling does not mean that all Muslims were prosperous.

Advani calls Manmohan weakest, inept Prime Minister

Ahmadabad, Dec 14: Senior BJP leader LK Advani today took on Congress and the central government and predicted that the time of the UPA government was nearing its end. In a press conference held today he also appealed to electorate in Gujarat and Himachal pradesh to vote overwhelmingly for the BJP and bring it to power. Advani also attacked prime Minister Manmohan Singh and called him weakest Prime Minister and inept.

The BJP leader claimed that “the country's political scene is all set to be radically transformed in the last week of 2007. Thereafter, in 2008, the Congress-led UPA government will in all probability have to count its remaining time in office on the fingers of the hand.”

Re: [indiathinkersnet] Half-burnt bodies exhumed in Nandigram

on how for electoral purposes the party loses its revolutionary zeal. The same has happened to the CPM and let us not canonise any party because electoral politics have done the same also to the CPM.

Walter! Center Pass a law on Electricity. According to the law all state govts need to divide the electricity board and form 3 different companeis with private support.

According to the new Centeral Govt. Policy For National Highway development if Central Govt. need to invest its money then state have to agree for BTO level road developments. That means for coming 15 or 20years our roads will be under toll and become Private property.

Central Govt. have a new Loan scheme to Municipalites in Pt. Nehru's Name. It include more Draconian policy than IMF and ADB loan. The interest rate no Municipality can accomodate.

As per the new industrial policy of the Central Govt. SEZ get a special tax relax. Who will come to invest in Non SEZ area?

What a CPM govt. can do against these Federal Law?

CPM do not promising that it will implement communism in Kerala or West Bengal but it promising that it will form a govt. with a manifesto and try to provide relief to the public under this Central Policy. It will try to slow down the privatisation policy.

It is easy to blame the Left Govts and CPM. But people do not oppose any Policy of Congress party. If CPM is not opposing the Nuclear Policy people will blame CPM but they do not oppose any policy of the congress party. This is a very funny trend among our NGOs and Activists. SEZ itself is a Human rights violation. Have you seen any Organisation opposing this draconian policy. Why so far nobody approach the Human rights organisation and Human rights commission against SEZ?

We can see in these Internet groups people are opposing SEZ in Nandigram. They do not raise the smallest finger agaisnt the policy of SEZ why?

It is excellent propaganda for a party in which I used to believe when I was young. It so happens that I have done a thorough, serious data based study of all development-induced displacement in West Bengal (and 11 other States)
1947-2000 and I do not buy these statements any more. Rehabilitation has been among the worst in West Bengal, only 9% of the displaced resettled.
