The Bibles were meant for a study group, said the Rev. Hermen Shastri, general-secretary of the Council of Churches. He said the confiscation constituted an act of harassment toward Christians. "The Council of Churches is flabbergasted that such acts are happening in our country with such frequency and impunity," Shastri said in a statement. "We call upon the prime minister ... to make a clear and unequivocal statement to assure Christians in the country that they will not be subject to such harassment," he said. The Christian Federation of Malaysia, the country's biggest church group, expressed similar sentiment on Tuesday, saying the government should stop harassing Christians. "We have received many complaints from Christians being told to hand over religious books to custom officers at various checkpoints in the country," said Federation chairman Bishop Paul Tan Chee Ing in a statement. "Now they even want our Bibles." The Bibles were taken from Juliana Nicholas, a Malaysian national, on Jan. 28. On Tuesday, a Malaysian government official said customs officers were wrong to seize the Bibles and that Nicholas can go and collect them. The government is apparently hoping to placate Christian groups and other minorities who are increasingly worried about their right to worship, according to The Associated Press. The Malaysian government had recently been embroiled in a series of religious identity cases where the plaintiffs converted to other religions from Islam. But their conversion was not legally recognized by the secular court which followed a strict Muslim interpretation that prohibits apostasy. About 60 percent of Malaysia's population are Muslim. The remaining 40 percent are mainly Christians, Buddhists and Hindus from the minority Chinese, Indian and other communities. ------------ [2] From: Khan Arif <ank2000pk@yahoo.com Date: Fri Feb 8, 2008 10:27 am Subject: Re: [Pakistan Post] Torture as means of eliciting truth! Man torturing man is a fiend beyond description. One of the most horrible, yet most important, discoveries of our age has been that, if you really wish to destroy a person and turn him into an automaton, the surest method is not physical torture, in the strict sense, but simply to keep him awake, i. e., in an existential relation to life without intermission. But no amount of torture can subdue the fanatical zeal of a suicide bombers willing and ready for death and agony. Torment, for such men, is a need, an appetite, and an accomplishment. Arif Khan "S. For a month they have been at loggerheads over the election of the Anjuman's executive committee and the acceptance of Muslim women for its membership. Just two days before the election, scheduled for 27th January, 2008, the Wakf Board sent a stay order, saying the new executive committee would be illegal as the approval for the election was not taken beforehand from it. But the Anjuman was adamant to holding the election. And it did. On the same date. They say they did it according to the Anjuman by-laws. Talking to TwoCircles. net from Ranchi today, Mohd Nisar Agarbatti, convenor of the election, justified the election process, saying there was nothing wrong in it. ------------ [4] From: Pradip Kumar Datta <pradip200@yahoo.com Date: Fri Feb 8, 2008 7:53 pm Subject: China protests PM's assertion on Arunachal will our PM react directly against Chinese claims ? i don't think so, this govt. lacks political will and guts..... China protests PM's assertion on Arunachal February 08, 2008 17:00 IST China has taken exception to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assertion that Arunachal Pradesh belongs to India and lodged a protest over it. China has conveyed to India that it was not proper to make such comments at a time when the two countries were engaged in talks over the boundary question, sources said. They did not specify when and where the informal protest was lodged. Singh, during his visit to Itanagar last week, had said that Arunachal was "our land of rising sun", in a clear message that the state belongs to India. China has been laying claim over large parts of the state and the two countries are holding talks to resolve the issue. The Special Representatives of the two countries are working out a solution as per the political parameters and guiding principles. http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/feb/08sino.htm ------------- [5] From: "Neeraj Bhushan" <neerajbhushansingh@hotmail.com Date: Thu Feb 7, 2008 11:58 am Subject: Bush in the dustbin of history? Hi! I may not be an expert on American affairs but I am a human being. I may not be a US citizen but I am a journalist. I may not be able to properly document the extraordinary political and public opinion failure that Bush's presidency has become; yet I cannot shrug my shoulders and look away. I may not be a good statistician to record the deep and lasting damage Bush has done to his Republican Party, yet I cannot remain oddly detached, like my fellow journalists, when it comes to Bush's decline. My web log http://neerajbhushan.wordpress.com/ has the latest on it. If interested, lets dissect Bush's two-term as American president. Regards. It is to be noted that you are trying to avoid very carefully any discussion coming in this group about Jama-et-islami and its media! can I know the reason of it? the Sangh Parivar will never allow him to be the PM of India, as he basically belongs to a backward community This is a problem with the right wing politicians and their inteligencia! Why not Modi? If George Fernandez can be the most powerful leader of NDA and Abdul Kalam can be president of India under Sangparivar ruling why not Modi to be a PrimeMinsiter? Don't forget Kalyan Sing become a chief minister in UP and Bangarappa become BJP President! Fascism do not bar anybody to reach a position if that give good advantage to fascism! If Modi can gather more votes He will be the Prime Minister! As pointed out by many observers, it is the mentality of the communal Gujarati middle class Blame upon the Middle class! What about the rightwing intelegenica? the NGOs, Activists and all other organisations which worked as brain and strategy for congress? Are they not executing BJP victory in Gujrath? Instead of strengthening the opposition groups in Gujrath and including the Left in the fight against Fascism they played a very dividing politics, if you study the politics of last 10-20months you can see a very organised attack over the left political groups in India from non bjp groups! Are they not responsible for Modi Victory? are they not responsible for the resurrection of BJP? Modism could not make any major impact in kerala, and this is mainly due to the high level of socio-cultural, educational, and living standards of people of kerala. You may attribute this to the influence of left front. But equally important is the contribution of religion (but not any religious groups, including Jama’ath!). Kerala is the highly communally polarized state of India! and Kerala is the place RSS have highest number of Sakhas! And highly educated specially Engineers working in IT field is the biggest supporters of RSS in Kerala! Most of the Malayalam Daily news papers keep very soft corners to RSS! most of the Kerala political parties keep soft corners to RSS! Muslim League had alliance with RSS in Kerala, Congress is in aliance with RSS, Kerala Congress (known as Christian congress) had alliance with RSS. Jama-et-Islami is against RSS but it reserve its soft corner to RSS in Kerala! Its Media never criticise RSS in Kerala! You can see many RSS murder in its reports coming as political clash and death! It is not the high level of socio-cultural, educational and living standrad of people of Kerala making them staying away from RSS! But one of the major factor is the mix of population! RSS attempt to influence Keralas Cast based organisations like NSS and SNDP is not succeeding due to the communist influence and left minded peoples membership in such organisations! Majority of the Temples are under the Dewasom Board rule only this means talibanisation of the temples not possible in Kerala except the few under the control of RSS. And the most important reason is that any such RSS backdoor deal will end up in communists resisting and making it a big issue in Kerala; this is what the importance of left influence in Kerala society! Let me say one more thing: I think who I am is not important. What is important is to what I stand for. If what you stand for cannot make what you are then what is the importance of what you stand for? Others Known as opportunistic! Like Parivar politics! regi! Mujeebulla Chemnad <kvchemnad@yahoo.com wrote: Dear Regi, You have written, “To Make Vajpey soft politician they created Advani, to make Advani a soft politcian Sang Parivar created more hardcore icons. Advani change to Vinay Katyar, Katyar become soft when Togadia taken up the role and Togadia become soft when Modi taken up the role. And tomorrow Modi will be a soft politician when Somebody in Orissa or Rajastan take up the role. And Modi will come into the national politics that day.” ---------- [9] From: Satyajit Roy <satyajit_roy@hotmail.com Date: Wed Feb 6, 2008 6:55 am Subject: RE: [indiathinkersnet] What is wrong with Pranab Mukherjee????
