India condemns Israel for attacks on Gaza civilians Tuesday February 12 2008 00:00 IST

ASHWANI TALWAR

NEW DELHI: India on Monday condemned Israel?s use of force in civilian areas in Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and said it would soon send humanitarian relief to the area.

The clear expression of support for Palestine came on a day when Israel Defence Minister Ehud Barak said his country?s defence forces were ?preparing for a large scale operation in Gaza.??

The Left might see the External Affairs statement as a balancing act of sorts. The Communists have criticised Delhi for launching last month an Israeli satellite capable of spying into Iran. The Left wants a debate in Parliament on this in the coming session.

Israel has imposed economic sanctions on Gaza and attacked Hamas buildings ? also killing and injuring civilians in the process ? in retaliation to rockets fired into its own territory. Last June, Hamas wrested control of Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

?India has followed recent events in Gaza and the West Bank with deep concern and anguish. The misery and hardship faced by the people of Palestine, especially in the Gaza strip, is deplorable,?? the Foreign Office said.

Though it asked for restraint from all sides, the statement was directed mainly at Israel. ?India condemns the use of force on the civilian population of Palestine and calls upon all sides, including Israel, to exercise restraint.??

India called for quick restoration of normalcy in the region and supported recent Egyptian efforts to promote dialogue among Palestinian groups. The External Affairs Ministry would soon announce a package of assistance for Palestinians hit by the fighting and the economic blockade.

?In addition to the assistance already delivered by India to the people of Palestine, we stand ready to extend additional assistance to help the people of Palestine to overcome the suffering they are facing now.??

Delhi also made clear that it was ready to help in the larger West Bank peace process. In November, it had attended the Annapolis peace conference called by US President George Bush of countries in West Asia and beyond.

Temple administration not government?s job: Sri Sri http://indiasecular.wordpress.com/ Feb. 11 - Rediff News

Opposing any move towards acquisition of temples by a government, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar has said that if such a step was indispensable, it must not apply only to places of worship of any one religion.

?It is not the government?s job to look after the administration of temples.

Moreover, if those in power think that it is a necessity, they must take care not to give an impression that the government is interfering in the matters of sacred places of only one religion,? Ravishankar told media persons in Allahabad on Sunday night.

The spiritual guru, who was in Allahabad to attend the last rites of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi of Transcendental Meditation fame, also said that incorporating spirituality into modern education was the only answer to the ills plaguing the world ?like terrorism, casteism, parochialism and shocking instances of people with brilliant academic and professional careers getting involved in heinous crimes.?Recalling fondly his five-year-long association with Mahesh Yogi, he said: ?I owe my spiritual advancement to the encouragement I received from him in my early youth.?

Ravishankar also blamed farmers? suicides in various parts of the country on ?environmental degradation brought about by mindless use of chemical fertilizers? and said his Art of Living Foundation was working towards promoting organic farming by actively involving itself in 30,000 villages.http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/feb/11sri.htm

65 year-old Naseeb Khan recently arranged for his son Prakash Singh to marry Sita, daughter of Ram Singh and his wife Reshma. Three months ago, Hemant Singh's daughter Devi married Lakshman Singh in a nikah ceremony solemnized by a Muslim maulvi. Naseeb Singh's elder son Roshan had a Muslim-style nikah, and his younger son Iqbal got married in the Hindu fashion.

Salim Khan keeps pictures of Hindu deities and local Rajasthani folk heroes in an altar in his hut, and regularly visits a neighbouring dargah of a Muslim saint. He says he is a Muslim, but, like many people in his village, he does not know the kalima shahada, the Muslim creed of the faith. His neighbour and first cousin, Madho Singh, has been offering the Eid prayers in the village Eidgah for as long as he can remember. Yet, like everyone else in his village, he also celebrates Holi and Diwali with equal gusto.

These intriguing people who defy conventional notions of 'Hindus' and 'Muslims', belong to a little-known community known as the Cheeta-Merat. Some 400,000 strong, the community inhabits some 160 villages in the vicinity of Ajmer and Beawar towns in Rajasthan's Ajmer district.

Israeli Lobby Declares War On Gandhi

By Punyapriya Dasgupta

The Jewish identity in the future appears bleak. Any nation that remains anchored to the past is unable to move ahead and especially a nation that believes its survival can only be ensured by weapons and bombs.
