INDIA "Black" day for India: new anti-conversion law in Rajasthan Nirmala Carvalho Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil denounces to AsiaNews the uselessness of the decree. According to the text, those who convert by "use of force, allurement or fraudulent means" risk five years in prison.

Jaipur (AsiaNews) - After more than two years of parliamentary debate, the assembly of the western state of Rajasthan has approved a new anti-conversion law. Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and president of the Catholic bishops' conference, denounces to AsiaNews: "This so-called Freedom of Religion Bill is a slur on the culture of our nation. India has long been respected in the international community as a country of tolerance, peace and respect for cultural and religious diversity, and this is a black mark on the nation".

The law had been approved by the state parliament for the first time in 2006, but the governor of the state, Pratibha Patil, had not signed it, sending it back to the chamber to be rewritten. But last week, the controversial text was approved. It prohibits conversions that take place by "use of force, allurement or fraudulent means", and condemns those who practise them to five years in prison and a 50 thousand rupee [approximately 800 euro] fine.

The cardinal comments: "These bills, which are absolutely unnecessary, are introduced by fundamentalist forces, the consequences of which are intolerance and mistrust, and loss of peaceful coexistence between peoples and communities, and eventually society and the nation suffer. I have always emphasised that these Freedom of Religion bills are against our constitutional freedom, our founding fathers enshrined in Article 25 of the constitution the right to the practise, profession, and propagation of faith".

Besides, the anti-conversion laws are used with increasing frequency to invalidate conversions from Hinduism to Christianity. Groups of Hindu nationalists accuse the Christian missionaries of violating the law with the celebration of baptism, and very often attack the Christians ceremonies without waiting for a judicial inquiry. But on the other hand, the law does not provide any restrictions for those who desire "to return to the true faith, Hinduism".

As Christians, concludes Cardinal Vithayathil, "This message of the resurrection cannot be restricted only to Christians, because it is a message which brings hope for the world. How can we not share the Good News of Christ's victory over sin and death? We are not converting anyone with this powerful message of hope, instead we are sharing with them news which is liberating".

With this ratification, six Indian states now include a law against conversions in their penal codes: Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan. According to some Indian legal texts, the first anti-conversion law was conceived by Gandhi himself, who considered missionaries "a remnant of colonialism".

http://www.countercurrents.org/johnson260308.htm

This is not a new episode of James Bond 007 movie. This is a true story about the most notorious terror organization in Bangladesh, enjoying official status and termed as ‘elite force’. Rapid Action Battalion [RAB] was established on March 26, 2004 and since its establishment a total of 472 alleged criminals have so far been killed in the name of "crossfire" or "encounter" between associates of the criminals and RAB members

Here's a comment on death of Encounter Specialist, by Prof. R. K. Gupta. The news of the death of Rajbir Sing, ACP, also given below.
- Abi

Most of these encounter specialists( like Rajbir singh ACP) are themselves corrupt and criminals. There is nothing like encounter allowed in constitution or any other law in country and can't be. It is serious violation of human rights. The people are killed in encounter on pretext of self defense. The deceased was also one of such criminal in unifrom. Many time businessmen, politicians and mafia members use such criminals to liquidate inconvenient persons and declare encounter and killing in self defense. Is not it funny that mighty police force needs to shoot a few or even one guy to defend themselves? What does it mean? They are thoroughly cowards and inefficient officers and deserve to be discharged. There is no scope for such killings in democracy. Courts must intervene to stop such mercenaries from killing people and charge them with murder while in uniform, the exact opposite of what policemen should do actually. This guy too was a goonda and that is evident by his killing by a property dealer another goonda. Same came out of that Mumbai based uniformed goonda. Is this country now openly managed by criminals, corrupt and shameless politicians and goonda elements? People must revolt against this. All police officers who have killed others in name of duty must be subject to a special committee of experts in which 51 % private citizens and members of judiciary should be present. It is trime to take the wind out of swollen bellies of corrupt and misbehaved and gtird calss polcie offcials in country. They are rampantly corrupt and filthy guys unable to catch even a mouse forget catching a crminal. Time to chnage polcie Act and CrPC and make thiese idiots in uniform accountbale with severe punishments. They aremain cause for crimes inn soceity and all kinds of encroachments, squatting and illegal buses and traffic etc. Right frok top that is from DGP to constable they are shamless idiots and rotten characters. Ofcourse they are under protection of Ministers concerned. It is time to berat uip such polticians and confiscate their property. People must come forward and make these criminals and corrupt run for their life.

Rajbir Singh, a controversial Delhi Police 'encounter' specialist with over 50 kills to his credit, was shot dead on Monday night in neighbouring Gurgaon allegedly by a property dealer over a dispute on "investments" he had made with the realtor. The 48-year-old assistant commissioner, whose career had its share of both glory and controversy, was gunned down at the office of the real estate agent Vijay Bhardwaj after an altercation over payment of profit money in a property deal. Singh was killed by his own gun given to Bhardwaj three days ago, Gurgaon Police Commissioner Mohinder Lal told a press conference

Subject: TASLIMA TO TIBET... Times of India

From Taslima to Tibet, India proves chicken J. Suraiya, Times of India

21 Mar 2008

Instead of the peacock, India should adopt the chicken as its national bird. Apart from the fowl being the dish of choice, at least in the northern part of the country, our official response to various situations - ranging from the Taslima Nasreen controversy to the protests in Tibet - can best be described as chicken-hearted.

Forced into exile from her native Bangladesh by religious fanatics who didn’t like her feminist writings, Taslima sought sanctuary in Kolkata in whose Bangla milieu she felt creatively comfortable.

However, after street riots instigated by local goons disguised as religious zealots caused the Marxist state government to decide that minority-appeasing discretion was the better part of secular valour, the writer was bundled out of the city and taken first to an undisclosed hideaway in Rajasthan and later to Delhi, where she was kept in virtual isolation.

Made to apologise for her ‘anti-Islamic’ views, she was warned by no less than the information and broadcasting minister - supposedly the custodian of the fundamental right to freedom of expression as spelt out in the Constitution - that she should not say or do anything that might hurt the religious sensibilities of any group. (Should the I&B ministry be renamed the ministry of intimidation and browbeating?)

Finally, Taslima has sought sanctuary in distant Scandinavia, saying: “A person who couldn’t be scared by fundamentalists has been defeated by cold-blooded state terrorism inflicted by the Indian government. My terrible experience has shattered all my notions about a secular, democratic India.”

Why did Taslima - yet another personification of freedom of expression — have to quit India?

Because when push comes to communal shove, for all its professions to the contrary, India is too chicken to stick to its principles of liberalism and democracy and allows mob rule to subvert the rule of law.

In the case of the Chinese crackdown in Tibet, India’s official response has been so politically correct, not to mention politically chicken, that it has earned praise from no less than the Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao (who might have made special mention of the Indian Left whose non-response might be summed up as ‘Tibet who?‘).

Despite China’s continuing claims on Arunachal, and despite its proven nuclear proliferation to Pakistan, New Delhi walks on eggshells where Tibet is concerned and seems vaguely embarrassed by the Dalai Lama’s presence on Indian soil.

Why? Because then, maybe, China will support India’s admission to the UN Security Council. Or at least stop using Pakistan as a foil against us. Or sell us cheap pichkaris for Holi. Or something.

The truth is that we are just too chicken to take on the big demons - Chinese totalitarianism, religious fundamentalism - but make do with assailing minor imps of the perverse.

For instance, Fiona Mackeown, mother of the murdered Scarlett Keeling, has been strictured for having left her 15-year-old daughter alone in Goa. What an unnatural, monstrous mother. How unlike the caring, sharing mothers of the suitably named Mother India, where female foeticide and infanticide are as common as the common cold.

Or take the case of health minister Ramadoss who is so busy fighting the evils of tobacco and liquor - by putting ‘gory’ pictures on tobacco products, and banning surrogate liquor ads - that he has no time to address the much larger ills that plague our practically non-existent public health system.

Can’t move mountains? Find convenient molehills, turn them into mountains, and then move them. That seems to be the recipe. Not just for the health minister but for the entire sorry mess which might aptly be called Indian chicken curry.
