In dry Gujarat, minister's family sips alcohol scam IANS[ THURSDAY, APRIL 08, 2004 02:03:53 AM ] http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/605724.cms AHMEDABAD: Gujarat's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finds itself in an embarrassing spot after large amounts of alcohol was seized from the home of a minister's son in violation of the state's prohibition policy. That Pratapsinh Chauhan is its minister for religious places and cow protection is even more inconvenient for the party, in the thick of campaigning for the elections in the country. A raid on Chauhan's family residence in Mehol in Panchmahals district, 150 km from here, Tuesday evening resulted in the seizure of alcohol worth Rs 15 lakh. More than 750 crates of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) were seized from the home of Chauhan's son Pravin, just next to the minister's residence. Ten people, including the minister's daughter-in-law Suman and grandson Shailesh, were arrested. However, his son Pravin, the main accused, managed to escape and police are on the lookout for him. The minister was away campaigning at the time of the raid. When the police team entered the town, a crowd gathered and started pelting the officials with stones. Police had to resort to three rounds of firing that probably left Pravin Chauhan injured. Though the minister could not be contacted as his phone was switched off, he has reportedly disowned his absconding son. "I had warned both my son and grandson when I first came to know of their activities. I have not met them for several years now," he was quoted as saying. Minister of state for home Amit Shah was unavailable for comment. |
