URGENT PRESS STATEMENT

THE EDITOR

Dear Madam/ Sir,

THE BOMBAY CATHOLIC SABHA DEMANDS FREE ACCESS THROUGH OUT THE YEAR. SPECIAL SERVICE AT 10 A. M. ON MAY 11 AT SEEPZ, MIDC, ANDHERI EAST. WE NEED TO SHOW OUR SOLIDARITY TO ENSURE THAT WE HAVE ACCESS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO THE ANCIENT CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST SITUATED AT SEEPZ.

The members of the Christian community will be having religious service on 11th May 2008 from 10.00 am onwards at the ancient Church of St. John the Baptist situated at Santacruz Electronic Export processing Zone( SEEPZ ), MIDC, Andheri ( East ), Mumbai.

The origin of the parish of St. John the Baptist can be traced back to two mass conversions at Marol. Some of the inhabitants of Marol were among the 500 people who were converted when the Church at Condita was opend for public worship on the feast of St. John the Baptist in the year 1579. The major portion of this Church is still standing tall. The said Church escaped the ravages of the Maratha war, for it continued to have the Vicars, appointed to it from 1739 onwards, who also looked after the remnant Christian community at Powai. Due to outbreak of the devastating epidemic, Fr. Jose Paes, the then Vicar of Condita at the time, having built a new Church in the village of Marol in 1840, transferred the parish from Condita to Marol and the old Church and parish house was abandoned. Before the old Church fell into disrepair, the statues, the baptismal font, the altars and few pillars were transferred to the new Church at Marol.

At the entrance of the Church of Marol stands a historic 4 feet statue of Our Lady with the child Jesus, known as the statue of Our Lady of Amparo ( Help ). This statue was once venerated in the Church of the same name that now lies submerged under the waters of Vihar Lake. This statue was brought to Marol between 1842-1853, when the Bombay Municipalty acquired the Vihar Valley with the church in it from the Vicar of Marol for a compensation of Rs. 1944.10. One of the baptismal registers of the Church of Our Lady of Amparo ( 1804-1832 ) is still preserved at Marol Church.

Till about the year 1973, Mass was celebrated at the ruined Church of Condita. This practice was discontinued when the property comprising a picturesque lake and the ruined Church was acquired by MIDC. There was also a huge graveyard in front of the Church which has been destroyed by erection of huge building thereon. Cardinal Simon Pimenta celebrated his first Mass as a Bishop of Bombay at this very site.

After the community raised the issue of access to the said Church, on 16th July 2004, then Hon’ble Minister for the Sports Mr. Sunil Dutt alongwith Hon’ble Minister for the Commerce Mr. Kamal Nath, in the presence of the local M. LA. Shri Suresh Shetty, the Hon'ble Minister for Tourism, Government of Maharashtra visited the Church and directed the SEEPZ Authorities to erect a separate compound wall around the precincts of the said Church with an independent access, which since has been done. In addition, the Hon'ble Minister had also directed the SEEPZ Commissioner to allot funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the said ancient church. The said Church is in a very dilapidated condition and if not attended too immediately will collapse. However, the SEEPZ Authorities for the reasons best known to them are still restricting the entry of the faithful, as they do not wish to allow the faithful to enter the SEEPZ premises. Access to the Church premises is only allowed once a year i. e. Second Sunday of every year.

This Church is now owned by M. I. D. C as revealed by RTI query.

The community members will observe 2 minute silence for departed souls at the above mentioned venue and will also pass resolution demanding immediate access to the said church throughout the year.

PLEASE DEPUTE YOUR "REPORTER" TO COVER THIS EVENT

Potential consequences of a regional nuclear conflict

N. Gopal Raj

---------------------------------
An exchange between India and Pakistan in which each side used 50 Hiroshima-sized nuclear
bombs, could leave more than 21 million people dead. That would be equivalent to about half the
global fatalities in the Second World War.

Parties mock Bush's knowledge of economics
http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/may/03bush.htm May 3, 2008 - PTI

All major political parties, including Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and the Left, on Saturday lashed out at United States President George W Bush [Images] for blaming growing demand in India for the spiralling global food prices as the opposition used the opportunity to attack the government.

Most parties said a major reason for the spiralling global food prices was diversion of land producing foodcrops in the US to bio-fuel production, while Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said Bush was 'completely wrong' in his assessment.

"George Bush [Images] has never been known for his knowledge of economics. And he has just proved once again how comprehensively wrong he is. To say that the demand for food in India is causing increase in global good prices is completely wrong," Ramesh said. The Congress criticised the US President saying the analysis was 'completely erroneous' as India was not a food importer but a food exporter. "India is a not a net food importer. It is a food exporter. The assumption that local prices are increasing because of a changed India is completely erroneous," All India Congress Committee spokesperson Manish Tewari said, adding 'the crisis is actually because of diversion of arable land in the developed world for ethanol production and because of changes in the climate pattern'. While the Left parties blamed the 'neo-liberal economic policies imposed on India by the Bush administration', the BJP used the US President's statement to attack the Congress-led coalition at the Centre over its 'failure' to control inflation. 'The statement by George Bush fixes into the frame of irrelevancy of the statements of the UPA ministers. It is the same like Praful Patel saying that price rise is due to change in food habits,' BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said. He said there was bound to be greater demand for essential commodities as the economy grows and noted that it was the responsibility of planners and the government to ensure food supply and control prices at the same time.

"At a time when millions of people in India are unable to get enough food to eat and suffer from malnutrition, Bush's insensible remarks about India's prosperity affecting global food prices are adding insult to injury," CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat told PTI. He said the US policy of subsidising and promoting bio-fuel out of crops was the major reason for the shortages and spurt in food prices.

"This is what President Bush has sought to cover up." CPI National Secretary D Raja blamed US policies for all major crises facing the world, particularly in energy and food sectors. "The Bush Administration is trying to cover up its own fault by shifting the blame to developing countries. It is the US which has shifted agricultural production from foodgrains to bio-fuel, thereby creating food crisis and pushing up the prices," he said. Raja described Bush's comment as 'a kind of racial statement', which blames India and China for heightened demand. The CPI leader said India grew its own food and did not 'exploit other nations like US imperialism'. Bush joined US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice [Images] in blaming the rising prosperity of India's huge middle class for the spiralling global food prices.
