KOZHIKODE, APRIL 19. The State Government has sought the immediate assistance of the Centre in rescuing hundreds of Keralites in Iraq.

At a press conference here today, the Minister for Non-Resident Keralites Affairs, M.M. Hassan, said that in his SOS to the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, and the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, he had apprised them of the predicament of the Keralites in Iraq. In his fax message he had requested them to take urgent measures for the safe return of the Keralites.

Mr. Hassan said the Government had also deputed the ROOTS-Non-Resident Kerala Development Initiative chief executive, K. Satish Namboodiripad, to New Delhi to hold talks with the External Affairs Ministry officials attached to the in this regard.

One of the stranded Keralites, Peter, who was a native of Karippuzha in Alappuzha district, had made a phone call to the Alappuzha district panchayat member, John Thomas, on Sunday asking him to do something to rescue them from Iraq.

Mr. Hassan said that for the past one week, the Keralites had been staying in an area of intense fighting between the U.S.-led troops and Iraqi civilians. They were denied food and water all these days. These hapless people had been warned by the authorities to leave Iraq by April 30.

The stranded persons should be rescued and brought to the neighbouring countries such as Jordan or Kuwait. This could be done only by the earnest efforts of the Centre, the Minister said. A Kochi-based manpower recruiting agency had duped these people by offering them jobs with a construction firm either in Kuwait or Jordan six months ago. They had been brought to Iraq.

The first two months, they were given salary and made to suffer subsequently. Only a week ago, heavy fighting began in the area where they were staying, the Minister said, quoting a language newspaper.

Mr. Hassan said he had asked the Ernakulam DIG to inquire into the particular recruiting agency in Kochi. Many fake manpower recruiting agencies were functioning in the State. Job aspirants should seek clarification about the recruiting firms from the Protector of Emigrants in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram before embarking on employment abroad.
