Subject: On Obama Camapign

[It is fairly disturbing, though not totally surprising, that Obama has chosen Biden as his running mate - so very much unlike him. Instead of trying to reinforce the platform of "hope", he has tried to fill up the "gap" - presumably to address the "middle ground". Instead of trying to make the "middle ground" shift towards the beacon of "hope", he has conceded to its presumed demands. Biden, in almost every possible way, symbolises the negation of what Obama is imagined to be standing for. So may actually very well turn out to be a liability by causing the diminution of Obama - the charismatic leader. But Biden's selection, apart from being a too cautious approach to fill up the "gap" is pearhaps also indicative of a possible shift in the campaign style in the coming days - to a significantly more vitriolic mode.

To be fair, it is still Obama the Presidential candidate, and not Biden. And one can hardly afford to get a McCain elected after eight years of the disastrous Bush regime in the name of pursuing some fancy radical politics.]

Woman burnt alive in orphanage; Congress to move no-confidence motion

After the arson: Firefighters douse the flames at an orphanage at Khuntpalli village in Orissa where protesters burnt alive a
20-year-old woman.

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa was on the boil on Monday during a bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal in protest against the killing of VHP leader Swami Lakshmanananda.

Protesters burnt alive a 20-year-old woman in an orphanage at Khuntpalli village in Bargarh district. In Kandhamal district, where the Swami and four others were killed by suspected Maoists on Saturday night, a villager was burnt to death.

Many churches, prayer houses and other Christian institutions were attacked in Kandhamal, Bargarh, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Boudh, Sundargarh and Jajpur districts. At least two prayer houses were damaged in the capital city.

Director-General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda said the woman who was killed in the orphanage was a student. Asked whether the victim was a nun, he said it was yet to be ascertained.

As regards the death of a villager in Kandhamal, Mr. Nanda said the police had received information, but were yet to reach the spot.

Unconfirmed reports said the victim, Rasanand Pradhan, who was suffering from paralysis, could not escape when many houses in the Christian-majority village were set on fire.

Road and rail traffic was affected all over the State during the bandh. Banks, markets and business establishments remained closed, while government offices recorded thin attendance. Educational institutions were closed.

In the Assembly, the Naveen Patnaik government faced an embarrassing situation when Bharatiya Janata Party legislators trooped into the well and stalled the proceedings demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in the killing of the Swami.

Simultaneously, the Opposition Congress demanded a discussion on the “deteriorating” law and order situation. They demanded the resignation of the Biju Janata Dal-BJP coalition government for its failure to maintain law and order.

Speaker Kishore Kumar Mohanty adjourned the House for the day after he failed to persuade the BJP members to allow the proceedings to continue.

The Congress, however, gave notice for moving a no-confidence motion against the government on Tuesday.

VHP leader's killing: Curfew, flag marches in tense Orissa
26 Aug 2008, 1039 hrs IST, IANS

BHUBANESWAR: Curfew was clamped in Orissa's communally tense Kandhamal district and police and paramilitary forces held flag marches in troubled towns on Tuesday, a day after two people were burnt alive and several churches were damaged by mobs during a statewide shutdown called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to protest the killing of one of its leaders.

Prohibitory orders under section 144, which prohibits the assembly of five or more people, have been clamped across Kandhamal district. "Besides we have imposed curfew in three places in the district," Inspector General of Police Pradeep Kapoor said.

Curfew has been imposed in Baliguda, Phulbani and Tumudibandh towns and police and paramilitary forces held flag marches in the trouble areas in the morning, he said.

Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, a member of VHP's central advisory committee, and four other people were killed at his Jalespata ashram in Kandhamal district, 340 km from here, Saturday evening after more than 30 suspected Maoist rebels opened fire on them, according to police officials.

Saraswati was leading a campaign against cow slaughter and religious conversion in the communally sensitive district - which with a population of around 600,000, including 150,000 Christians, has witnessed numerous clashes between Hindus and Christians in the past.

However, Hindu groups in the state blamed the church for the crime and alleged that Christians had killed Saraswati because he was opposing religious conversion in the region. Christian organisations have denied these allegations.

Saraswati's supporters have been holding protests since Saturday night, blocking trains and vehicles.

On Monday, mobs attacked churches, torched vehicles and stopped rail and road traffic across the state during the VHP shutdown. A 22-year-old woman was killed and a church official badly injured when angry mobs burnt down an orphanage in Khuntpali village in Barhgarh district, 300 km from here.

Most government and private offices had witnessed thin attendance as thousands staged demonstrations and burnt tyres in several villages, towns and on national highways.

The state government had Sunday ordered a judicial probe into the killings and announced compensation for the victims. Authorities also constituted a special police team to investigate the crime.

‘Dalit Muslims are SCs’

New Delhi, Aug. 26: Adding to the intense debate over affirmative action, India’s National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has recommended Scheduled Caste status for Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians on grounds that socio-economic status does not change with religion.

"There is a strong case for according Scheduled Caste status to Dalit Muslims and Christians," says a NCM report, "Dalits in the Muslim and Christian Communities: A Status Report on Current Social Scientific Knowledge". "A Scheduled Caste person’s socio and economic status remains unchanged even if he changes his religion. Hence, there is no ground to deny him benefits of affirmative action simply because he changes his creed," said NCM chairperson Mohammad Shafi Qureshi.

"The present government has the determination to take bold initiatives for the welfare of the people on margins. I do not foresee any reasons in not heeding and executing our recommendation," Mr Qureshi said. The minority panel is planning to submit a copy of the report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and urge him to hasten efforts to meet the demand of Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians. The NCM’s recommendation is in sync with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes’ stand, which has consented to the idea but with the rider that SC status to the minority groups should not affect the 15 per cent quota norm for Hindu SCs.

HC raps Asaram for ashram row

Ahmedabad, Aug. 26: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday asked the police to file a case against spiritual leader Asaram Bapu’s ashram here for the attack on several journalists last month and also asked it to pay appropriate compensation to those injured in clashes. The court ruling came after a hearing on a public interest litigation.

Civic organisations had given a call for Ahmedabad shutdown on July 18 to protest the alleged tardy probe into the mysterious deaths of Dipesh Vaghela, 10, and his cousin Abhishek, 12. The boys, studying in the gurukul run by the ashram in Motera on the outskirts of the city, were found dead in the riverbed nearby on July 6.

While the police initially said the two had died of drowning, their parents said they might have been victims of occult practices. During the shutdown, a group of journalists outside the ashram was attacked and many of them were injured. The Motera centre run by the Asaram Bapu Trust refused to comment on the court’s order.

The dead bodies of the two children, staying at the ashram ‘gurukul’, were found near Asaram Bapu’s ashram on June 7. Following the incident, the people of Motera village, surrounded the ashram and clashes broke out between inmates and villagers. While police initially said the two had died of drowning, their parents said they might have been victims of occult practices.

However, on Monday, the Supreme Court declined to impose any restrictions on the media while reporting about the goings-on at the ashram. A bench comprising Chief Justice K. G Balakrishnan and Justice P. Sathasivam, however, sought response from the Centre regarding the laws and guidelines, if any issued by the government
