Activists of the Hindu radical organisation Bajrang
Dal in a Madhya Pradesh town are graduating from canes
as weapons of self-defence to guns and rifles, perhaps
keeping pace with the changing times.

In the Gunj Basoda area of Vidisha, a group of about
35 Bajrang Dal activists can be seen learning how to
handle and use firearms every morning and every
evening.

Their day begins with physical exercises followed by
training in martial arts like judo and karate and then
lessons in how to use firearms.

"Ability to use firearms is the need of the hour,"
said Anand Prakash Goel, a Bajrang Dal leader in
Vidisha.

"We also have to change the way the world is
changing," declared the leader of the group that is
known for its militant anti-minority stance.

"By training a person in the use of guns and firearms,
we can instil confidence in him or her," he said.

"The Bajrang Dal is the militant wing of the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), just as the Bharatiya Janata
Party is the political wing and the Vishwa Hindu
Parishad is the religious wing," said a political
analyst.

Though the Bajrang Dal is flouting rules by imparting
firearms training to its cadres, the district
administration and police in Vidisha said they had not
received any such reports.

"I am not aware of such training," Vidisha police
chief R.P. Shrivastava told IANS.

Added another police official: "Rules are being
flouted in the training. A person who has a licensed
pistol, rifle or gun cannot give it or lend it to
another person even for a second or firing one shot."
