Review of criminal justice system required: Law Minister June 2, 2004 NEWDEL DEL42 New Delhi, June 2 (PTI) Concerned over the "sub-standard" quality of the Bar in the country, Law Minister H R Bharadwaj today stressed on proper training of the lawyers and suggested comprehensive review of the criminal justice system. "There are so many poor teaching schools which churn-out sub-standard lawyers. We need to improve the quality of the Bar. Presently, even a sweet-meat owner can manage to get license to practice law," Bharadwaj said after accepting the 190th report of the Law Commission on Insurance laws. "During my earlier tenure as Law Minister I had insisted for five year law course and one year training after that," he said. Noting that "the laws pertaining to criminal justice in the country have not been revised since 1861", the Law Minister emphasised on the need to comprehensively review them. "There are many white-collar organised crimes, happening in present day which were not there in that time. We need to review our laws to tackle such crimes," he said. The Minister also talked about rationalisation of Court Fee, re-examination of Evidence Act and police reforms during his informal discussion with the Law Commission Chairman M J Rao, who presented the minister with the report "Revision of Insurance Act 1938 and Insurance Ragulatory and Development Act 1999. The Reports besides outlining a grievance redressing mechanism aims at combining the Insurance Act 1938 and Insurance Regulatory and Development Act 1999, Rao said. PTI |
