Prominent citizens want Modi’s scalp

Statesman News Service
GANDHINAGAR, June 1. — Eminent citizens here will shortly
table a charter of demands before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan
Singh and Mrs Sonia Gandhi demanding legal action against
Gujarat chief minister Mr Narendra Modi and his Cabinet
colleagues for fomenting viollence in the state.

At a meeting attended among others by Mr Harsh Mandar,
Mallika Sarabhai, Father Cedrik Prakash, Shabnam Hashmi,
Mr Batuk Vora, Mr Digant Oza, it was decided that demand
will also be raised for a special judicial commission to inquire
into the Godhra massacre to ascertain the exact cause of
fire on coach S-6 of the Sabarmati Express.

The charter demands immediate repeal of Pota “with
retrospective effect’’. They alleged that the Gujarat
government has blatantly misused the Pota to victimise
the minority community. Mr Amit Shah, minister of state
for home, strongly advocated use of Pota against
antinational elements and announced that 175 people
had been booked under this provision. “We need such
laws to prosecute people for incidents like Godhra,
Akshardham, Haren Pandya murder — the right place
of them is Sabarmati Jail.’’ The Charter also wants the
UPA government to support the recommendation of
amicus curaie in Supreme Court Mr Harish Salve who
proposed that a Supreme Court Judge and a senior
police officer re-examine all cases of closure, acquittal
and bail in the post Godhra happenings. A demand
has also been made for a probe by a sitting Supreme
Court judge into allegations of deliberate partisanship
in the appointment of public prosecutors and judges.

Gujarat government’s warning
AHMEDABAD, June 1. — The Gujarat government will
amend and implement the Gujarat Control of Organised
Crime Act if the Congress-led government at Centre
repeal Pota, state Home Minister Mr Amit Shah said here
today. Mr Shah accused the Congress of opposing the
law right since the time the NDA government
implemented it at the Centre. Now the demand to
remove Pota was more vehement as Congress was in
power at Centre, Mr Shah said while replying to the
budgetary cuts demands of Home department by the
Congress in the Assembly.— PTI
