I think that Mr. Karat made a mistake, about not allowing the CPM to participate in the govt. A lot of experience could have been gained from that by those who did make it into some ministries. CPM is after all strong only in Kerala, West Bengal & Tripura. But of course, they would have faced a lot of contradictions too; so they are the best judges of whether they could manage it or not. I am sure they helped to get the Domestic Violence Bill included in the CMP, for which I am really rather delighted with them! Follow-up, coming up. As for other things, 'the growth' of CPM reminds me of the growth of the Communist Party in Germany, just as the Nazis were gaining ground! It was Trotsky who pointed out that the growth of the latter was at such a stupendous pace that the growth of the former will mean nothing. But I would rather that history did not repeat itself, at least in this instance. Cannot bear the thought of 'motherland' becoming fascist! Karat is quite right about the middle class and several other things in the interview.Overall, a good interview. The decimation of the BJP-Sena in the metropolises does not owe much to the Left as such. In Mumbai for eg, the rout of a Manohar Joshi was least expected by any non-Congress people. In fact, Congress had offered that seat to Shabana Aazmi, who declined it and at first tried to get North-West (Sunil Dutt)! (Later she retracted and did not stand at all). The CPM however has definitely helped in Chennai; no doubt about it. Many dilemmas face those of us who wanted the return of some semblance of secularism to the country - at the level of what policies to support; even what policies are possible. The country's water resources are dangerously low. What would a Sharad Pawar, used to overusing water and taking the water table down as rapidly as possible do about it? What is the point of land reforms, if the land getting reformed is arid? The CPM still defines food security in terms of PDS alone and not enough in terms of better management of precious natural resources. The world is already in the post-industrial age and they ought to think about that.
