Armitage says sorry to George as George tried to play down the issue a bit ! --------------------------------------------------- NDA govt did nothing as US stripped George http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/5922_885347,0015002100000000.htm Saurabh Shukla New Delhi, July 13 The NDA government had decided to remain silent about the "strip-search" of former Defence Minister George Fernandes in the US last July because it feared that a protest would spoil bilateral ties. This was despite advice from senior MEA officials who wanted a note verbale protesting against the incident to be issued to the US government. The incident was first reported by the Hindustan Times last September. Later investigations revealed that Fernandes had told then Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee of the rough treatment, but the matter was never raised. Yashwant Sinha, who was then the minister for external affairs, his deputy Digvijay Singh and Kanwal Sibal, who was foreign secretary at that time, were also informed about the incident by senior ministry officials who had accompanied Fernandes. "We were told that Fernandes was given very rough treatment despite the fact that the US officials were informed that he was the Indian defence minister. It was a shameful incident and we wanted to protest and seek an apology, but we didn't get any instructions from the political leadership to take up the issue with the US," a senior MEA official told the Hindustan Times. The incident had occurred at the John F. Kennedy airport when Fernandes was transiting the US on his way to Brazil, despite the fact that the Indian consulate in New York had informed the US protocol department about the visit.
