Human Resource Minister Arjun Singh has taken the Left demand further by requesting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to "cleanse the administration of people owing allegiance to the Sangh". Addressing a national convention on secularism on Sunday, Singh said: "Our first duty is that the fascist forces of the RSS should be detected. Today, the Government administration is in the grip of the RSS; we have to cleanse it."

The Left parties had asked Singh and Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy to remove all saffron elements from their respective ministries. While Reddy is yet to openly speak on the matter, Singh's remarks appear to be an endorsement of the Left demand. Saying that the RSS has a stronghold on the administration, Singh, who has removed academicians close to the BJP and RSS from panels drafting textbooks for schools, said: "Men having sympathies with the sangh parivar were appointed (by the NDA) to key positions.

"If an institution's biggest achievement was the killing of Mahatma Gandhi, then you can expect what national purpose it can serve," he said, urging that "the RSS people in the Government be exposed". "Not one, but there are hundreds of different fronts of the RSS. They are getting crores of rupees from within and outside the country. The previous Government allowed foreign money to come in but now this web has to be broken. The people should know for what purpose the money was used," Singh said.

Singh also said he hoped the Prime Minister would take definitive action in the regard. Also present at the convention, CPI general secretary A B Bardhan maintained his earlier position that Singh and Reddy were faced with difficulties in their respective ministries due to the presence of a large number of saffron-friendly people. Accusing the BJP of propagating politics of hate, the CPI leader said the party had changed the word Hindutva with nationalism. "Do not forget Hitler played havoc around the world in the garb of nationalism," he sought to warn.

Senior Congress leader and noted advocate RK Anand demanded a ban on the RSS saying even Sardar Patel had opposed the sangh. "A huge amount of money was garnered abroad and distributed among several organisations which were close to the RSS. Under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, the purpose for which foreign money was brought in and the use it was put to have to be told to the Government. The money the RSS received should be investigated," he said.

Sachin Pilot, Congress MP from Rajasthan, moved a resolution calling for a thorough study of working of the RSS
