HOSTEL STUDENTS' STRUGGLE COMMITTEE
BHUKH HADTAL MANCH, BOYS' HOSTEL MAIN CAMPUS, PRATAPGUNJ,
 BARODA.
PRESS RELEASE
         Date: 16.08.2004.

Victory of the Hostel students' movement

The 58th Independence Day turned to be the glorious day of students' movement in M.S. University. More than 1500 students (boys and girls) gheraoed the Vice Chancellor Shri K.C. Upadhyay, Chief Warden Dr. Anil Navale, Registrar Shri A.V. Gupta and Syndicate member Shri Gopal Bhati for more than eight hours and achieved a major victory.

As a part of the ongoing agitation against the closure of two hostels and fee-hike, students hold placards along with black ribbon just after the flag hoisting. Thousand of students stood with placards (with slogans like - inquilab zindabad, long live students' unity, we are students, not terrorists, withdraw fee-hike, stop closure of hostels etc.) when Vice Chancellor delivered speech. Immediately after completion of Independence Day programme, students gheraoed the Vice Chancellor who tried his best to escape. Students also gheraoed the Chief warden, Registrar and Syndicate member Shri Gopal Bhati.

Initially Vice Chancellor was not at all ready to listen students and laugh at students. Irate students shouted slogans and asked V.C. not to laugh and listen them seriously. Students also questioned chief warden Prof. Anil Navale that how can he allege hostel students coming from Naxal belts like North east, Jharkhand and Rajasthan as they are in illicit drug and liquor trade. Students also demanded a public apology from Prof. Navale for making such derogatory remarks. Prof. Anil Navale though denied the charges earlier, but ultimately publicly apologized in front of students for such irresponsible statement. While students informed Vice Chancellor when all the hostels are not only full but also some of them are overcrowded, he called all the wardens who also confirmed the same. Ultimately V.C. agreed for negotiation. A meeting with a student's delegation was decided at Chief warden office, Nimb Niwas. Vice Chancellor was escorted in gheraoed position to the chief warden office. During this time three girls fainted due to exhortion.

Outside the Nimb Niwas all the students continued agitation and demonstration along with slogan shouting. A 12 member students' delegation went to talk with the University authority. Finally, Vice Chancellor accepted demands as stated below -

* Manubhai Mehta (M.M.) will be reopened and admission will be given immediately.
* If students are left without admission after Manubhai Mehta (M.M.) is full, Lal Bahadur Shastri (L.B.S.) Hall will be opened.
* It is also decided that Deputy Chief Warden Dr. M.K. Natrajan has been removed with immediate effect from the responsibility of the Girls Hostel and an enquiry committee will look after the complain and irregularity related to Dr. M.K. Natrajan.
* Dr. Shailaja Bharadwaj of Department of Hindi, Faculty of Arts has been appointed as Deputy Chief Warden for Girls Hostel.
    * Assurance of immediate construction of girls' hostel.
* Superintendent of P.G. Hall has been appointed which was vacant for the last 3 years and superintendent of S.D. Hall will be appointed within a few days.
* Rs. 50/- mess administrative charge for girls hostel has been revoked with immediate effect.
* Fourth cot for the fourth (additional) partner will be provided in girls hostel. Repairing work and all other problem related to hostel would be taken up immediately.

Hostel committee headed by Syndicate member Dr. Vasudev Singh will look after the issue of fee-hike; other hostel related issue and a student's delegation would meet the committee to submit a written memorandum to the committee.

Hostel Students' Struggle Committee, keeping faith in the Vice Chancellor Dr. K.C. Upadhyay's assurance as he spoke in front of students', wardens, media, senior citizens and other senior University authority, is suspending the hostel movement. But we will deep vigil that all the demands of students and Lal Bahadur Shastri (L.B.S.) is opened if required; otherwise we will again restore to the path of movement in a democratic and peaceful way.

We are thankful to all girls and boys' student, teachers, citizen, BUTA, All India Save Education Committee, PUCL and all the press who have given all out support to the movement, which has forced ultimately University authority to bow down and accept all the demand of students after almost 3 months of movement. In future also such united movement has to be released to fight all out attack on education.

Yours,

For Hostel Students' Struggle Committee
