Tension after attack on church

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR, AUG. 27. Tension continued to prevail in Raikia town of Kandhamal district of Orissa today following the attack on a 50-year-old Catholic church on Thursday afternoon.

All the shops and business establishments in the town remained closed during the day. Senior police and administration officials were camping in the area to maintain law and order.

The authorities were also trying to form a peace committee taking representatives of both the communities.

No one had been arrested in the case till this afternoon.

A large number of people, including some local traders, had first demolished a disputed fence outside a school run by the minority community and later desecrated the church.

The miscreants had damaged the statues, furniture, musical instruments and other articles.

The Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, Raphael Cheenath, condemned the incident and demanded security for the 3000 Christian people living in and around the town.

At a press conference here this afternoon, the Archbishop termed the attack "pre-planned' and said that some Hindu fundamentalists were behind the incident.

"The local police could have prevented the attack,'' he said.

V.V. Augustine, Member of the National Commission for Minorities who was present at the press conference, also condemned the incident and demanded action against the guilty.

The Archbishop and Mr. Augustine met the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, this morning and discussed the issue.

They also underlined the need for the formation of a Minority Commission in the State.

The Chief Minister expressed concern over the incident and said he had already asked the State Home Secretary to get the matter thoroughly probed, Mr. Augustine said.
