From: Regi P George <george_regi@yahoo.com> Date: Mon Aug 30, 2004 Subject: Agents con woman into prostitution Agents con woman into prostitution By Sunita Menon Staff Reporter http://www.gulf-news.com/ After spending four terrible months in a Dubai flat, Anita was 'sold' to another man in Abu Dhabi. ?©Gulf News Dubai: Anita, a physiotherapist from Kerala who was brought here under false pretences, forced into prostitution and attempted suicide twice, has managed to escape that life of hell after a horrifying five months. The 31-year-old divorcee and mother of three was repatriated home last night with the help of the Indian Consulate in Dubai. "My children and the rest of my family have not heard from me for the last five months. I am not going to tell them anything. I will simply tell them that I am back home because my visa had expired." The only reason she accepted the job offer in the UAE was to give her daughters a better life. "I used to work in a hospital in Kerala. There I met Nasser, who's from the same state and whom I learnt later was actually a contact man for illegal racketeers, involved in luring single women and sending them to Gulf states." Anita used to earn Rs4,000 back home. "I was told that I have been selected to work in a clinic in Dubai." She gave Nasser Rs100,000 (Dh8,000) to process her travel documents. "Since I could not manage that huge amount, I was told that I could pay half the amount and the rest would be deducted from my salary every month in the UAE. I was promised a salary of Rs10,000 (Dh800). All this happened in early March." A week later Anita was handed a photocopy of a work visa. She was to fly to the UAE from Coimbatore. "The day I was to leave, Nasser handed me a photocopy of a visit visa. I was also told that doctors from the clinic that had hired me would receive me at the airport." She was met at the airport by two men who dropped her off at an apartment in a congested area. There were five young women there and a couple of rough looking men and an elderly woman. "The elderly woman asked me whether I would like to get on the job right away. It was then that I realised that I had been duped. I ran to the door but I was threatened and told that I would never see my children again." The next day Anita was forced to "entertain" a man. He paid Dh50 to the elderly woman. Anita was locked inside a room. Every 15 minutes, a man entered the room from 6pm to 1am. On the third day in Dubai, she made up her mind to commit suicide, but was caught while jumping from the flat's balcony. As punishment, she was beaten and kicked by two men called in by the elderly woman. A few weeks later, she tried to kill herself again, but was again caught before she could slash her wrists. "I spent four terrible months in that place. I was not able to leave the flat. We were forced to take contraceptive pills. "As the days passed, I became more and more violent and was always creating problems for them. As a result, I was sold to another person for Dh6,000 in Abu Dhabi. One day a man who used to clean the flat took pity on me and told me how to escape. "One morning when some other girls and I were being taken to another apartment I managed to run away. I was given shelter by a good family that I met. "One day while I was watching a programme titled Gulf Round Up on a Malayalam channel, I saw the channel's telephone number on the screen. I rang them up the very next day. They were the ones who contacted the Indian Consulate and told them about my plight. That is how I was rescued." http://www.gulf-news.com/ |
