Dear Friends: We draw your very urgent attention to the situation in Manipur (and the rest of N.E. India), and the countrywide agitation to support the demand that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act be immediately and summarily withdrawn. Recently the Minister of Home Affairs made a visit there; and the projections are that nothing would come out of it. Kindly spend a few moments to review the on-line petition initiated by the Boston-based "Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia", and sign it. Full details are contained in the recent issue of Frontline (where it was the Cover Story), - the link provided below. The AFSPA link, also provided below, gives a thorough description of the Act, and why it needs to be repealed. Thank you for your attention and support. A fresh FIR has also been registered against her under Section 309 IPC. Sharmila was also produced before the CJM today where she expressed unwillingness to accept freedom on bail after which the Court remanded her to judicial custody till September 24. Case dossiers mentioned of Sharmila??™s family members reluctance to receive her when they were informed of yesterday??™s CJM Court ruling. She had also refused nose feeding. During interrogation, Sharmila admitted to the charges levelled against her while reaffirming to continue her agitation until the AFSPA is completely withdrawn from Manipur. Mention may be made that the CJM ordered the release of the hunger striker on the ground that the one year detention term for her offence (attempt to commit suicide) was equated during her judicial custody period.
