The Emergency Relief Committee being opened at the Hospital to take care of the needs of the injured protestors had received a total amount of Rs 2,10,485 as donation from public and had spent Rs 1,91,566 so far. The decision was taken in the executive council meeting of the organization held at Aizawl, capital of Mizoram yesterday and announced to the media in a press conference today. The meeting had put the AFSPA at the top of its priorities and demanded that this draconian Act be removed once and for all from the North East region.(Manipur Today, September 16, 2004, Thursday) http://www.manipurtoday.com/news/detailtopstory.asp?Key=525 10) The Sangai Express, September 20, 2004, Monday Damodara presents State case to Prez IMPHAL, Sep 19: In solidarity with the cause of the people for complete withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from the State, BS Damo-dara Swami, president of Bhaktivedanta Institute has written to the President APJ Abdul Kalam for conceding to the demand of the people. In a letter, Damodara said that he was deeply shocked to see the painful situation inflicted upon the women and children of Manipur by the Act, imposed in the State since 1961. The long history of pains and suffering inflicted upon the people rather than protecting them has culminated in the pre-sent ongoing agitation, he said. What has been seen in Manipur is that this Act has caused the enhancement of the militancy in the State, he said, and suggested a pro-per platform for dialogue for understanding the problems of the people would be the most desirable way to deal with the burning situation of the State. Damodara also requested the President for paying a visit to the State and said that this could help to heal the deep wound in the sentiments of the people. Body reacts: Reaction Chief of Army staff General NC Vij??™s assertion that Thangjam Manorama was not raped, Thangmeiband Wo-men??™s Organisation, Khoyathong Polem Leikai has asked if that was really so why did the accused AR personnel hesitated from giving their statement before the enquiry commi- ssion probing into the case. The women??™s body also denounced Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh for not being able to protect the people from the excesses of the security personnel. Meanwhile, Meira paibis belonging to 25 organisation of Laikhong and Nongpok Keithelmanbi ha-ve resolved to extend their unstinted support to the ongoing public agitation until and unless the AFSPA is lifted from the State during ajoint meeting today. Members present at the meeting also burnt the effigies of Prime Minister, Chief Minister and local MLA S Chandra after the meeting. ----------------------------------------------------------- (B) PWG WATCH 1) Maoists urged to raise Muslim concerns IANS HYDERABAD: A meeting of Muslim "victims" of police atrocities on Sunday urged Maoist guerrillas to include alleged excesses on the Muslim community in the agenda for the proposed talks with the Andhra Pradesh government. A meeting of activist groups here urged the People's War Group (PWG) to take up at the talks the indiscriminate arrests of Muslim youth and the attempts to brand them as Pakistani spies and terrorists. According to delayed reports reaching here, Kovakonda SI Prakash Sonu was kidnapped by armed men on September 17, while he was driving to Bejji in the morning.
