Dear Editor, If there is something to rejoice today, it is the occasion like this, awarding Right Livelihood Award to Asgar Ali Engineer.Ashgar Ali's battles with communalism and Fascism will be now remembered forever. We are proud of you Ashgar Ali. Asgar Ali the man who has carried forward lonely battle with communalism, Religious Fundamentalism, Ashgar Ali the reformer, Asgar Ali an honest Engineer in MCOGB, Ashgar Ali as a Author and writer has made great contributions in every field he has entered or even touched! Those who have read Asgar Ali's writtings will never forget to recall atleast two of his memorable articles from his book, Communal Violence In Post Independence India 1984. His Article 'Bhivandi Bombay Riots -1984' and Riots in Godhra. While reading his article on Bhiwandi Bombay riots in 1984 , his observations and account of unfolding of events and the paralysis of state machinery, Government and the behavior of then Chief Minister, I am sure every reader feels that he his wittnessing / reading on the unfolding of events of 1992post Babri riots! Similarly his article on Godhra . Both show powerful insights and foresights into shape of things to come and the inexorable logic leading to the carnage and the political happenings. As if everything was in nascent stage which rapidly lead to it's full blown manifestations. Not only his social committment, his daring, his intelectual integrity but also his political insights and observations are admirable. I am sure this award will give him the wings of imagination, daring and foresight to carry out great things in future. About recent Census Controvery on growth of muslim population he has correcly stressed that it is the impoverishment of muslim population, this entire segment of population being pushed by the ruling classes into army of unemployed, deprived from job/employment opportunities is the real obstacle to their modern education and not the traditional oreligious obstacles ( assigned to them by religious Hindu fundamentalsts). Let us ignore or scrutinize sometime in future carefully, how the deep rooted black sexual anxietites of Hindu fandamentalists are aroused and highlighted by these controveries. The award has strenthened his and should strenthen our resolve and should inspire the intelectuals from Muslim and all communities to carry forward the message of liberation. One cannot forget that the the muslim community and Dalits are organic part of the oppressed working masses and their liberation is inseperable from theirs. If Hindu fundamentalists are swinging to the parochial ideas, to mythology and psychic frenzy, neurosis, hysteria and psychosis, the working calsses, muslims and dalits shoud be inspired by scintific spirit, modern psychology, value the significance of collective human work,learn to interpret myths and develop a vision of the bright future, which will make their life richer and meaningful. Ashgar Ali has shown us a way out, made the community in which he is born proud. Let thosand intelectuals be born in the community with their heads high up. And let us walk with them hands in hand.
