Subhadra Das, wife of Income-Tax Commissioner Shibaji Das, was involved in a hit-and-run accident at Charni Road yesterday, when their car was hit by a speeding Maruti Zen.

However, she and her driver were fortunate to escape with only minor injuries. A Star News reporter, who happened to be in the area, took both Subhadra and her driver to Bombay Hospital.

Subhadra was on her way home in the family’s Ambassador car from a medical appointment, at 12.15 yesterday.

At Bal Bhavan, Charni Road, a speeding blue Maruti Zen suddenly came from behind, hit the Ambassador and fled. Subhadra’s driver, Baban Kelkar, lost control of the car and rammed it into a lamppost on the road divider.

Luckily for them, Madhur Kalra, a trainee reporter with Star News was in the vicinity and came to their rescue.

Kalra called up Shibaji and took both the injured to Bombay Hospital. “We are grateful to Madhur for his timely help,” said Shibaji. “My wife is quite fortunate as in all the hit-and-run cases in the past week, nobody survived,” he added.

Subhadra Das and her driver have received superficial injuries and minor fractures and are recuperating at Bombay Hospital.

The Marine Drive police have registered a case.
