Mahatma Gandhi's grandson apologises for Gujarat violence (Sept 28 2004, IANS) Toronto : Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, apologised for the 2002 sectarian violence in Gujarat, his grandfather's home state in India, during a public function here. "I am ashamed of what I saw and heard and I profoundly offer my sincere apologies to all of you on behalf of my people," Gandhi told a packed banquet hall with an audience of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians. Gandhi's comments came Saturday after he watched portions of a documentary titled "Final Solution" made by Rakesh Sharma. The three-hour documentary is based on footage of the violence and interviews with the survivors and some perpetrators. He was speaking during the annual convention of the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI), which presented Gandhi the Pride of India award.
