From: SANSAD <sansad@sansad.org> Date: Mon Oct 11, 2004 2:52am Subject: Announcing a public event on Kashmir Dear friends: We send you this notice for showing a new documentary by Parvez Hoodbhoy, and also a general discussion on the immensely important topic of Kashmir. Hope you will join us on October 24, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. SANSAD A documentary film And an Open Discussion Kashmir: The Flashpoint of War and the Key to Peace SANSAD invites you to a viewing of Kashmir, Pakistan, India: Crossing the Lines of Control a video documentary by Dr. Parvez Hoodbhoy followed by an open discussion. Location: Video In 1965 Main Street Vancouver Sunday, October 24, 2004, 2-5 pm Kashmir has been the major issue of conflict between Pakistan and India since the subcontinent became free of the British colonial rule. Within a South Asia torn by internal conflicts, the hostility between Pakistan and India has led to three wars and the possibility of a nuclear exchange. The dispute over Kashmir has devastated the people of that beautiful land, and has distorted the possibilities of economic, social and political development in Pakistan and India. Today, the leaders of the two countries, led by the will of the people, are moving toward dialogue, opening the hope of a peaceful resolution to this destructive conflict. Can we, as diasporic South Asians, think beyond the limits of nationalist animosity toward a future of peace? Dr. Hoodbhoy's documentary offers a starting point for this exploration. Dr. Haider Nizamani, Professor of Political Science, UBC, will provide a historical context for the discussion. Mr. Imran Munir, Journalist and doctoral student at SFU, will be a resource person.
