From: Rupesh Garg <rupeshgarg20@yahoo.com> Date: Sun Oct 17, 2004 6:25pm Subject: Boomerang business--Truth Prevails Boomerang business By RAJA M Economic Times | OCTOBER 03, 2004 http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-871777,curpg-2.cms So another senior income tax official and his family were caught last week with a few crores of unaccounted cash hidden in their house. I wonder how many more such crooks hide in India, trapped in a self-made hell of their addiction to greed, dungeons of deceit, mirage of delusions and terror of discovery. Anyone who says crime pays has no clue to what happens every moment in the body and mind as inevitable consequence to crime. Just as fire burns, negative actions cause their inevitable inferno of suffering within. At the surface, life seems ok. Beneath, a volcano of misery bubbles every moment. The income tax official was lucky he was caught. He has a chance to escape his inner torture. So too does India, going by the research that turned up for my recent article on corporate social responsibility or CSR. More Indian companies realise that honest business practices are not an option, but a necessity in a global economy. The CEO of Infosys, Nandan Nilekani, told me: ???The softest pillow is a clear conscience.??? Most of us underestimate the power of that conscience. Which is why Transparency International annually ranks India as one of the world??™s most corrupt countries. And which is also why any talk about India being a future economic superpower is silly mudwash until we pay more respect to truth. No credible business entity does business with crooks. But for India to reduce its crook population, we need a better understanding of crookery. Take the case of the crooked tax official. General public reaction would be not of disgust and loathing at a filthy traitor to the country who has robbed it of its rightful money. Instead, the response would be a mix of envy at a fellow who amassed so much wealth with a semi-sneer that he stupidly got caught. The critical gap in the above story is the crooks who bribed the IT official to the sum total of crores. Why are these bribe givers not being traced, caught and booked as being partners to the crime? Bribe takers cannot exist if bribe givers do not. And let??™s face it, we are a nation of bribe givers. We grease palms when it suits us and curse corruption when it does not. The bribe giver is a bigger crook. Those wagging the usual bunkum about blaming ???The System??™ or ???others are doing it??™ only admit to the fact that they have no control over their lives and responsibility for their actions. And like drivers in runaway trucks, such people are menace to themselves and society. They better wake up. Wiser corporate employees are doing so by taking a 10-day Vipassana course, and experiencing the real world where it??™s clear how much better business strategy is honesty, because the essence of quality is truth.
