The issue was discussed during the talks the government's interlocutor K. Padmanabhaiah had with Thuingaleng Muviah and other leaders of the Naga outfit in Bangkok. "The outcome of today's talks between the Indian government side and the NSCN (IM) was very good. The talks went off very well and we have accepted the prime minister's invitation to visit India," a member of the Naga delegation said. The member, who did not want to be identified, said the dates for the visit had not been decided though it was likely to be in mid-November or December. Another round of talks will be held on Saturday before the two sides issue a joint statement, he said. http://in.rediff.com/news/2004/oct/22naga.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- #2 WATCH ON KERALA'S MINORITIES 1) NDF DECRIES JAMA'AT ATTEMPTS TO DERAIL MUSLIM BOARD MEET New Indian Express, October 22, 2004, Friday NDF decries attempts to derail Muslim Board meet KOZHIKODE: The National Development Front (NDF) has accused the Jama??at-e-Islami of trying to obstruct the ensuing meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), to be held at Manjeri in December. Without naming Jama??at-e-Islami, a press release from the NDF said the Kerala unit of an organisation, which has representation in the Board, has been making secret moves to drag NDF??s name in the controversy. Jama??at-e-Islami is a member in the Board. ??????It is NDF??s declared stand to cooperate with the common forums from local to national level. Cooperation with forums like Personal Law Board, All India Milli Council, and Muslim Majlise Mushawara is part of the stand. NDF has a special commitment to Personal Law Board as it is a forum which actively intervenes in issues like the Babri Masjid and common civil code,???? the release from NDF general secretary Nazarudheen Elamaram said. Though the Board was formed in 1972, representation from Kerala was limited to the presence of Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait and former State Ameer of Jama??at-e-Islami T.K. Abdulla. It was only two years ago that NDF chairman E. Aboobacker and Jama??at-e-Islami Ameer K.A. Siddiqe Hassan became members of the Board. NDF leaders P. Koya, E.M. Abdurehman and K.M. Ashraf had participated in the meetings of the Board as special invitees. Aboobacker has been regularly participating in all the meetings of the Board, the release said. (Addition in print edition): Except Sait, no other members used to take part in the meetings regularly, the release said. Jama'at-e-Islami all India Ameer had taken part in the meeting of executive of the BOard in Lucknow in October 2003, in which the idea of conducting the meeting in Kerala was mooted. Later, the meeting of the office-bearers of the Board decided to hold the meeting in Manjeri and appointed Sait as Chairman and Aboobacker as convenor of the reception committee. The release said other organisations have fallen into the trap prepared by those who do not want the meet to be held in Kerala. http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IER20041022014535&Page=R&Title=Kerala&Topic=0& ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) IMPRISONED MADHANI NEEDS URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION Keralaonline, October 22, 2004, Friday Mahdani seriously ill, needs medical attention, says father The father of People's Democratic Party (PDP) supremo Abdul Nazer Mahdani, lodged in jail in connection with the Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case, has said his son is seriously ill and needed urgent medical attention. (RELATED ITEM BOTTOM) After visiting his son in the Coimbatore jail yesterday, T A Abdul Samad urged Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to visit Mahdani to see his plight. He welcomed the Cabinet decision authorising Chandy to take appropriate steps to ensure proper medical care for Mahdani. Samad told mediapersons that the artificial limb that Mahdani had been fitted with after a bomb attack on him 12 years ago, had broken and needed replacement. Besides, Mahdani was also a diabetic and his ulcer had worsened. ''He immediately needs ayurveda and physiotherapy and we don't have any confidence in the treatment in jail or in Tamil Nadu. Bail is the only way to get good treatment,'' an agitated Samad told reporters. He alleged political conspiracies were being hatched to keep Mahdani, who has been languishing in a Tamil Nadu jail for over six years, imprisoned. Samad said Chandy, as the convenor of the Congress-led Front, had met Mahdani twice to seek the PDP's support. The present government had come to power with the PDP's support but had done precious little to help Mahdani, he said. ''At least on humanitarian basis, his case should be considered. Though several cases were foisted against him during the jail term, the court has rejected all of them. Only one case is now pending,'' he said. Mahdani was arrested on March 31, 1998 in connection with a speech at Kozhikode and had been fighting for his bail ever since. [Agency] http://www.asianetindia.com/keralanews.asp?folder=Keralanews&file=7_4518.xml ------------------------------------------------------------ New Indian Express, October 22, 2004, Friday 3) CM urged to visit Coimbatore jail KOCHI: T.A. Abdul Samad, father of PDP chairman Abdul Nasser Madhani, on Thursday urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to make a visit to the Coimbatore Central Prison, where Madhani had been jailed, to study his health condition. Addressing a news conference here, Samad said that his son??s condition was deteriorating. He said Madhani was suffering from a number of diseases, including cervical spondylitis, disc problem, ulcer and high diabetes. Welcoming the State Government??s decision to intervene in the matter, Samad expressed the hope that the Chief minister would take necessary steps to save Madhani. He urged Chandy to take immediate steps to obtain bail for him. ??????In fact, Madhani has to replace his worn out artificial limb by new one periodically. But during the last six-and-a-half-years of incarceration, he was not permitted even to replace the artificial limb,???? Samad said. Madhani has been suffering from severe spine and collar pains. ??????He was given painkillers which worsened the ulcer he already had. And being on wheel chairs with hardly any exercise, his blood sugar level is also shooting up. He must be given proper treatment immediately for which bail should be granted,??? he said. Though the Supreme Court has ordered for the hearing of his case on a day-to-day basis, the Tamil Nadu administrative system is not abiding by the order, Samad alleged. It is a welcome move that the State Cabinet has entrusted Oommen Chandy with handling Madhani issue, he said. He criticised the erstwhile Antony Govt for sending a fax message to the TN Govt saying that his release would create law and order problem in the State. http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IER20041022014634&Page=R&Title=Kerala&Topic=0& ------------------------------------------------------ 4) KERALA: Attacks On Minorities Part Of Larger Design: CPI New Indian Express, October 22, 2004, Friday Attacks on minorities part of larger design: CPI MALAPPURAM: CPI state secretary Veliyam Barghavan on Thursday said the attacks against minority communities at Olavanna in Kozhikode and Mala in Thrissur are the outcome of a major BJP-RSS conspiracy. ??????BJP has understood that the only way to come back to power is by pursuing hard-core Hindutva and by instilling hatred among various religious groups,???? he said. ??????The attacks should be seen in the backdrop of the RSS reasoning of BJP??s failure in the Parliament election as a result of ???soft Hindutva policy??. Advani??s declaration after his return as party president, that BJP would stick on to ???real Hindutva??, should also be seen in this context,???? he told reporters after attending the party??s district council meeting. Veliyam said the attacks were only a beginning and the Sangh men would perpetuate it further in different manifestations with a motive of fuelling minority hatred among the Hindu community. He also accused CM of being silent on the ???heinous activities?? of the communal forces. ??????Though the real culprits of the attacks were known to all, Chandy never said a word against them in public. It was a clear testimony of his party??s ???secret understanding??,???? he said. http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IER20041022014903&Page=R&Title=Kerala&Topic=0& ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Confederation of Human Rights Organizations (CHRO) 3, Rams' Cottage Ambalathumukku Pettah Thiruvananthapuram-695024 Kerala South India Ph.: 0471-2476262 www.humanrightsindia.com www.humanrightskerala.com |
