About 15,000 rebels launched a multi-pronged attack around 1 a.m. Monday in Gamgadhi, headquarters of Mugu district in the north tip of the country's Midwest, destroying 13 buildings, the state-run Nepal Television channel reported. Explosives and arson destroyed the district police office, forest office, revenue office, district post office and the area development committee office. A blast destroyed the telecommunication tower, cutting off communication lines to the outside world. The office of an international aid agency, the World Food Programme, was also destroyed, the channel said. The body of a Maoist was found at the spot, the state channel said. Private radio channels reported the deaths of two Maoists. Himalayan Broadcasting Corp, a private channel, said the Maoist attack was in retaliation to the military operations conducted in various districts, resulting in the death of at least 15 Maoists since Oct 28. The rebels had called a ceasefire from Oct 20 to 28 to allow the people to celebrate Dashain, Nepal's biggest festival, in peace. The government reciprocated tacitly, suspending military operations against the insurgents. |
