From: Shiva Shankar <sshankar@cmi.ac.in> Date: Tue Dec 14, 2004 Subject: Dalit poet gets place in Asia Who is Who (fwd) Dalit poet gets place in Asia Who is Who Adilabad, Dec. 12: Ganga Ram Kurme, popularly known as G R Kurme, a renowned Dalit writer and social activist hailing from the interior Agency village Karathwada in Boath mandal, has now got international recognition for his contribution to Dalit literature for the last 20 years. Rifacimento International, a US-based organisation, has included his name in the Asian/ American Who's Who, Volume 4, to be published for 2004. Kurme is now working as in-charge Deputy Inspector of Survey, Utnoor division in the district. Kurme has four books to his credit, including anthologies of poems - Punaadi Rayi, Muddugumm- and Dammapatham (Poems on Lord Buddha's life). He is a founder member of the AP Dalit Rachayithala Kalakarula Medhavula Aikya Vedika, established in 1992. His five poems were published in the renowned anthology of Dalit poems Chikkanavuthunnapata which created waves in Telugu literature in the State. He has received many literary awards from various organisations including Manoranjani, Ranjani Kundurthi, Andhra Pradesh State Cultural Council and Vishwabharathi. He has also participated in a number of poetry sessions in the State and outside. He had also received the Ambedkar Fellowship by the Bharatiya Dalit Sahitya Academy, Delhi, in 1993. His poems have been translated into Kannada and English literary anthologies, Jeevanosthaha and Voices on the Wing respectively. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle Kurme said he had chosen poetry as means to educate Dalits and backward class people and expose problems faced by them in society over the centuries.
