From: "Viren" <vlobo_1@hotmail.com> Date: Wed Dec 29, 2004 8:13pm Subject: Bank Consolidation misplaced priorities TT Ram Mohan in his article Bank Consolidation - Misplaced Priorities has pointed out some very important facts. 1. He has debunked the proposition that Indian banks can take on global majors through mergers . SBI the largest Indian Bank is 1/10th of the 9th largest bank in the world. It is however true that the need to be more competitive stems from global aspirations to cater to the needs of the Indian Diaspora and the international operations of Indian corporates . What has not been mentioned by TT Ram Mohan is that strategic alliances in this regard are being sought . 2. The profitability of Public Sector Banks has grown consequent to deregulation from 0.42% in 1998-99 to 1.12% in 2003-2004 ranking next only to the USA. Left unsaid was that this was achieved primarily by retrenchment of staff and reduction of priority sector lending . NPAs to the tune of Rs lLakh crore plus have not been touched . Very clearly the objective of banking sector reforms is in the interest of corporates on one hand and to provide an avenue for the insatiable appetite for profitable areas of investment . The whole issue of the impact of changes in the banking sector on the small scale sector and the small and marginal farmers reeling under the scissor grip of lack of markets on the one hand and declining profitability on the other has been left unexamined . Is the question of health of the banking sector ( merger or otherwise ) a question of sustaining itself or is it related to the health of the economy as a whole ? Viren |
