Kalam to address meet on NE indigenous issues

NEW DELHI, Jan 10 &#8211; A high profile deliberation on &#8216;Education and empowerment for self-rule&#8217; is slated to be attended by the President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, besides a host of senior Central leaders including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi at Guwahati, next month. The two consultations, slated to be inaugurated on February 22 and to continue till March 7, are being organised by Indian Confederation of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples North East Zone (ICITP-NEZ) and its allies in collaboration with UN Education Caucus. The conference would get under way with an inaugural address by chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Sonia Gandhi, while the President, Dr Kalam, would deliver the valedictory address.

In attendance would be over 70 international delegates, besides all the Governors and Chief Ministers of the eight States of the north-eastern region, besides Minister Tribal Affairs and DoNER, PR Kyndiah.

A spokesman of the organiser said that the purpose of the consultations was to create a transparent and inclusive mechanism for indigenous and tribal people to bring awareness about the mandates of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, as also to provide them with the opportunity to air their views on all six thematic areas including human rights, education, socio-economic development, health, culture and environment.

The objective of the conclave is to produce a collective regional mandate, for presentation before the Fourth session of the United Nations&#8217; Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, in May. The data generated would also contribute to Indigenous and Tribal Peoples&#8217; status within the Millennium Development Goal (MDG), spokesman added. The purpose of the consultation on Education titled &#8220;Culturally Appropriate Education for Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Asia&#8217; is to present specific indigenous and tribal education models for the proposed organization work for the Fourth session of the Permanent Forum.

The second consultation on &#8220;Empowerment for Self Rule for the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples is to assist in Asia&#8221; was to assist indigenous and tribal people in Asia reflect on their right to ownership of the existing natural resources and their economic situation.

The events would be held in Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati where around 70 international delegates from all Asian countries were scheduled to participate. The opening and the closing sessions will be opened to public.
