Cops pray at Perumal temple before filing chargesheet

KANCHEEPURAM: Apparently keeping in mind the personalities they are arraigning, police officials on Friday took the unusual step of carrying the chargesheet in the Sankararaman murder case to the Varadaraja Perumal temple, seeking to invoke the Lord's blessings in their mission.

Accompanied by the Chief Investigating Officer in the murder case and Additional Superintendent, A Saktivel, and some other officials, SP K Premkumar, who heads the Special Investigating Team, went to the temple, with the chargesheet in a sealed enveloped and placed it before the presiding deity in the sanctum sanctorum.

After performing pujas and offering prayers for about 30 minutes, the team went back to their office. Later they went to the court of the first class judicial magistrate G Uttarmarajan around 12.30 pm and filed the voluminous document running into 1,873 pages despite it being a holiday on account of Bakrid.

Kanchi Shankaracharyas Jayendra and Vijayendra Saraswati have been named accused number one and two in the murder of Sankararaman, manager of the temple, on Sept 3 by hired killers in his office within the temple premises.

KARNATAKA: CM Attends Benny Hinn's Meeting

Rediff.com/PTI, January 21, 2005, Friday

CM attends Benny Hinn's meeting

Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh on Friday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party and Sangh Parivar for opposing American pastor Benny Hinn's prayer programme in Bangalore, which he attended along with some of his ministerial colleagues.

He rubbished the BJP's claims that the state government permitted the three-day 'Festival of Blessings' by Hinn at the behest of the Congress high command and asked, "What did the Sangh Parivar do when the pastor held a similar show in Mumbai last year?"

Shiva Sena chief Bal Thackeray had attended the programme in Mumbai, Singh said.

"The Constitution has guaranteed right to all faiths to worship and practise their religion.

"I am going there as the chief minister of the state, as I have done on earlier occasions honouring invitations extended to me by several religious institutions.

"When our spiritual leaders can visit foreign countries and conduct prayers, why not leaders of other faiths be not tolerated by us?"

The CM appealed to people of the city to cooperate with the government in maintaining peace during the event.

Hinn's meet getting undue publicity: Catholics

K Ramakrishna in Bangalore

The Catholic Church in Karnataka has disassociated itself from the controversial prayer and healing session organised by American evangelist Benny Hinn in Bangalore on Friday.

Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore said the Church is not "directly or indirectly involved" in the Festival of Blessings programme by Binn, which has invited criticism from a number of Hindu groups in Karnataka.

"Everybody has the right to preach about Christ, but that does not mean it should have fanfare and hype. Even Jesus Christ went about preaching the good news and doing good and he worked awesome miracles. But he did it all with admirable humility," Archbishop Moras told reporters.

He said the Festival of Blessings by Hinn is attracting unnecessary publicity.

The archbishop rejected Hinn's oft repeated allegation in his meetings that the Roman Catholic Church worship idols.

"External symbols are necessary for a religion. Catholicism is not idolatrous. We do not have idols. We only have statues and we 'venerate', not 'worship' saints. Worship belongs to God and God alone. The images of saints we have and venerate help strengthen our relationship with God," Archbishop Moras said.

He said the Catholic Church in India does not encourage its followers to attend the Hinn prayer meetings.

Violence mars bandh against evangelist meet

K Ramakrishna in Bangalore

Amidst protests from Hindu priests and the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka, renowned American evangelist Binny Hinn is slated to hold his prayer meet -- Festival of Blessing -- at Jakkur, on the outskirts of Bangalore, on Friday evening.

Stray violence marred the bandh called by 'Hindu Jagaran Vedike' against Hinn's programme. However, normal life largely remained unaffected.

About 15 BJP legislators, led by party national general secretary Ananthkumar, courted arrest as part of their protest against the meeting.

Many pro-Hindu organisations led protest marches to the venue on Friday, disrupting traffic and forcing the Bangalore police to boost security for the prayer meeting.

Nearly 10,000 policemen have been deployed at the venue.

Swami Raghunath Guruji, a representative of Hindu priests in Karnataka, said that Hindus were not against Hinn's prayer sessions but were concerned about conversions.

"We fear that this prayer meeting will be used to convert poor Hindus into Christianity. We want the government to ensure that no conversion takes place during the Festival of Blessings," Swami Raghunath told rediff.com.

He alleged that Hinn's Festival of Blessings programme was an international conspiracy sponsored by US agencies to invest Rs.1.4 billion for conversions in Asia.

In fact, Hindu priests in Karnataka had announced that they have called off protests against Hinn's programme after the state government assured them that there would not be any conversions during the healing sessions.

The state government has refused to ban the Festival of Blessings, saying that the Indian Constitution permits prayer meetings.

Karnataka Revenue Minister M P Prakash, who met with a group of Hindu priests, said that the government would ensure that would be no conversions or healing sessions during the event.

Miscreants entered a Church premises on Hosur road and damaged a tableu inside the compound. The Forum Mall nearby threw nets around their building to protect the PVR cinema and building plexiglass.

Traffic has been hit following the protest by BJP and Sangh Parivar supporters in different parts of the city. Protestors blocked traffic on Mysore Road and Hosur Road and burnt tyres on the roads in several other parts. Many taxi operators are refusing to hire people to go for the event anticipating trouble.

Though a holiday on account of Bakrid, traffic police were not manning most junctions as they were busy on the Hinn beat. Many corporate offices are allowing their employees to leave early fearing trouble on the way home.

Arrests

Around 15 BJP MLAs led by national general secretary Ananth Kumar and Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar courted arrest after a protest at the Mahatma Gandhi statue.

The leaders and activists demanded the government to stop the three-day Benny Hinn programme saying that the event is aimed at conversion of Hindus. The police took them into preventive custody and released the leaders later.

According to City Police Commissioner S Mariswamy, 100 people have been arrested from different parts of the city. Miscreants who were forcibly closing down shops and puncturing bus tyres and blocked traffic were also arrested.

FASCISM: Sena Says No Delhi ODI Versus Pak

Rediff.com/PTI, January 21, 2005, Friday

Sena says no Delhi ODI versus Pak

The Delhi Shiv Sena has threatened to disrupt the proposed One-Day International cricket match between India and Pakistan in the city "at any cost".

It says it would be a "deception" to have sporting links with Islamabad till the time it puts an end to terrorist activities in the country.

Asserting that the people of India will not accept such matches in the name of creating goodwill in the midst of bloodletting on the country's borders, the Sena's Delhi unit president Jai Bhagwan Goyal said, in a statement, "We will not allow the one-day cricket match in Delhi at any cost."

Sena activists had dug the pitch at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in Delhi on January 6, 1999 ahead of a similar match when Pakistan toured India last time.
