3] KERALA: One Dies In Police Custody New Indian Express, January 23, 2005, Sunday One dies in police custody PALAKKAD: A death in police custody was reported from the Kollengode police station here on Saturday. Murugan, 36, son of Kunhappu of Pyllur in Kollengode, was arrested on Saturday on charge of raping a 27-year-old mentally retarded woman who resided in his neighbourhood. The police said that Murugan was brought to the Kollengode police station around 12 noon. Half-an-hour later, he reportedly vomited and fell unconscious. He was rushed to the government hospital, Kollengode, where he died at 1.30 p.m. The police suspect that Murugan would have consumed some poison before being arrested and that would have caused his death. However, the exact reason would be known only after the post-mortem of the body which was scheduled to be held at the Medical College,Thrissur, on Sunday. New Indian Express, January 23, 2005, Sunday Karunanidhi??™s poser to TN police CHENNAI: DMK president M Karunanidhi on Saturday asked whether the Tamil Nadu police would issue a summons to Lord Varadaraja Perumal to appear as a prosecution witness in the Sankararaman murder case. Ridiculing SIT chief SP K Premkumar for performing special pujas at the Varadarajaperumal temple before filing the chargesheet in the case, Karunanidhi had a dig at him for saying that Lord Varadarajaperumal was an eyewitness to Sankararaman??™s murder. ??????Can the testimony of Varadarajaperumal, who according to Premkumar is an eyewitness, be ignored? Will Varadarajaperumal be subject to cross-examination???™??™ he asked. ??????If so, as a key witness, Varadarajaperumal will have to answer several questions during cross-examination. Did He not feel like preventing the murder that took place in front of him? After all wasn??™t Sankararaman also your devotee? Couldn??™t you have prevented his death? Stating that were traces of alcohol evidenced on Srinivasachar, revealing that he had imbibed alcohol, the police said the killer had first strangled and then hacked the forehead and thrust a knife on the neck. The enquiries revealed that the land owned by the mutt was in the name of the slain mutt manager. Police said it was finding it difficult to question Hindi speaking Ramayanji who had come to relieve the mutt manager for his visit to Bihar to attend his mother's last rites stayed. Ramayanji had stayed with Srinivasachar on the night of the murder. Meanwhile, the body of Srinivasachar lay at the mortuary of the Chengapattu medical college after post-mortem, awaiting the relatives to claim it, police said.
