Yunnan Chamber of Commerce seeks reopening of Stilwell Road
GUWAHATI, Feb 21 ??“ Yunnan Provincial Chamber of Commerce (YPCC) of China has suggested reopening of the famous Stilwell Road for better connectivity and facilitating trade with the North East India. ???The Stilwell Road which is known as Tea Horse Road in our province would be a focal point in future to carry forward trade among the South East Asian countries,??? Yang Canzhang, Vice-Mayor of Baoshan city of Yunnan, said while talking to this correspondent here today.

The famous Stilwell Road which connects North East India, Myanmar and Yunnan Province of China has been helping the barter trade among the people living along the border.

In this context he informed that YPCC had already taken up the matter with the concerned authorities for early opening of the road so that the traders of North East, Myanmar and Yunnan can take advantage of it. ??? With the globalization of trade and emerging economy in the South East Asian countries we should have better communication links to explore the potential???, Canzhang added.

A 16-member Chinese delegation led by Wu Xiaoli, vice president of YPCC arrived in the city yesterday to participate in the 12th International Trade fair and initiate discussions with the Trade bodies in the region for future investment in the North East.

Asked whether the YPCC was willing to invest in the region keeping in view the available resources, he said that the trade body would conduct a study in the region. ??? We require more feedback from the region before investment. But once the Stilwell Road is opened , trade and investment would increase automatically???, he opined. Canzhang also advocated setting up of a ???sister city??™ in the North East India similar with the Baoshan city of Yunnan to provide a platform for the traders to exchange their views with the Chinese.

What is more interesting is that the YPCC has decided to incorporate important tourist destinations and potential areas of the North East India with their websites to disseminate information in China.

Earlier, the members of the Chinese delegation had a long deliberation with various trade bodies ,government officials and the tour operators in the North East India in which they urged the Chinese team to start more air connectivity with the region to give a boost to the tourism sector. They also invited traders from the region.

It may be recalled that North East Chamber of Commerce and Industries (NECCI) and the Indo-Myanmar Traders Union have been demanding for opening of more trade routes with China and Myanmar in order to increase the volume of trade. They have also opined the legal trade routes with China and Myanmar would contain the free flow of third country goods into the region.

World Bank --Mizoram green groups to file case

Mizoram green groups to file case against Govt project

Aizawl: Environmental groups in Mizoram are likely to file a public interest litigation against contractors of the World Bank-funded State road project as the contractors have neglected to abide by the WB's environment concern stipulations, sources said.According to the Environment Management Plan for the project, contractors should monitor the air, noise and water pollution and the damage to biodiversity that can occur due to the project. However, contractors here are yet to monitor the effects even after two years of commencement of the project, the sources added."Environmental activists are alarmed at the apathy that the contractors show towards protecting the environment. The monitoring system is a mechanism put in place by the World Bank to ensure that the envisaged purpose of the project is achieved for the benefit of the target population. But if the contractors continue to ignore their commitment, the environment and biodiversity of the State would be affected beyond
redressal," the sources said.

The sources further said that people are forming opinions that these contractors do not care one bit about the environment and its sustainability as this is a tribal and backward State."Environmental organisations along with the participation of other NGOs, are giving serious thought to filing a public interest litigation in the appropriate court so that environmental justice for the affected people and other ecological refugees are ensured," the source said. The state roads project, which has been divided into two phases, Phase I & II, is yet to see any monitoring from the environmental aspect since the project commenced which is running into its third year.
