From: "River Basin Friends\(RVC\)" <riverbasinfriends@yahoo.co.in> Date: Tue Mar 8, 2005 0:43am Subject: Rally against Govt??™s flood and forest polici es.Assam Rally against Govt??™s flood and forest policies.Assam Background: This is first time in Assam when people affected by faulty Government??™s policy have assembled in large numbers in a mass convention on the themes land, forest, flood and displacement on 4th march 2004 in Guwahati attended by numbers of dignitaries from different school of thoughts and beliefs from all over Assam and voiced in unison against erroneous Government??™s policy affecting the inhabitants of Brahmaputra River Basin in flood plains / forests. The citizen??™s voice repeatedly echoed that the new development policies which speak mostly about tapping NE India??™s water resource for HEP generation, land allotment for MNCs and TNCs (globalization, looking east) will alienate huge chunk of population from their homelands making them refugee in their own territory. Community??™s ownership over land is also spoken in the solidarity reflected in the convention in favor of the affected people has further spirited up the affected people to demonstrate to assert their right which has been witnessed on 5th and 6th March 2005. People on long march: GUWAHATI, March 5 ??“ About one thousand people from various parts of the State engaged in a determined battle of wits and nerves with the police on the city streets. This they did in their bid to highlight the plight of lakhs of people in the face of the Government??™s faulty flood protection strategy and forest policy. The people comprised the representatives of the flood-affected people of South Kamrup, Rangiya and the forest policy-affected people of Doyang and Tengani areas. The police tried to barricade their protest procession taken out from near the Gauhati Commerce College, at Chandmari Colony point and Silpukhuri. But defying preventive measures of the police these people reached the D C Court point in a rare show of dogged determination and blocked the all important MG Road there for about 30 minutes. They held a protest meeting against the faulty flood protection measures and forest policy of the Gover The meeting among others decided to send a team of 200 volunteers on foot to Doyang and Tengani tomorrow. This team will try to mobilise public opinion against the move to gift the NSCN (IM) leaders with a chunk of Assam land, said Akhil Gogoi Advisor to the Doyang Mukti Sangram Samiti and Brihattar Tengani Unnayan Samiti. The meeting was addressed, among others, by journalist and writer Jatindranath Bargohain, Nizamuddin Ahmed of the South Kamrup Banpratirodh Samiti, Takam Mising Porin Kebang Advisor Bhuban Pegu, CPI-ML??™s (Liberation) Pankaj Das and representative of Lovita Nari Sangha, among others. They later sent memorandums to the President. Solidarity: History speaks that popular sentiment of north easterners of India is always curbed or systematically denied by the policy makers and policy executors in the name of national integrity/nation building process, bullying the people??™s right to live with dignity. Adoption of similar strategy is obvious to dominant the said people??™s movement. Hence it is the high time to establish solidarity with the movement by every human being who beliefs right to live with dignity is every human being??™s basic right and there by strengthen the movement to overcome state??™s conspiracy and establish their choices.
