Subject: WHY HAS CM IGNORED SONIA GHANDI'S LETTERS ?

Press release June 04

WHY HAS CM IGNORED SONIA GHANDI'S LETTERS ON REHABILITATING SLUM DWELLERS ?

THE POOR ARE TESTING THE POLITICS AND POLITICIANS!

Mumbai slum dwellers' protest begun on May
16th is still on at Azad Maidan. In meeting with the CM, on the 21st of May, he had said that only after the court's decision regarding the cut-off date will he discuss any other matters. However it has been proved that the Maharashtra Govt. does not need any court's permission /decision to help rehabilitate the poor citizens of the city .

Justice Chandrachud also stated very clearly that the State cannot stop anyone from migrating to Mumbai. The constitution grants every citizen the right to reside in any corner of the country, which is a part and parcel of right to live. He also questioned the decision of rehabilitating slum dwellers outside Mumbai, as in Kalyan, Ambarnath- as they may have no source of livelihood available. Justice Chnadrachud suggested that the Maharashtra Govt. should meet and discuss with the organizations intervening in the court's matter, their proposal and try finding an appropriate solution.

However, the government has taken no initiative towards discussing anything till date. Even after the first few spells of the monsoon, no decision has been taken regarding the thousands of evicted slum dweller families. It is evident that they are least concerned about the children and senior citizens who are facing scorching sun today and will have to put up with the wet weather without any proper shelter.

It is in this context that we are compelled to make public Sonia Gandhi's letters dated 7th May and 13th May, addressed to the CM of Maharashtra asking him to take prompt and just action towards the slum dwellers.

It is clear that despite the suggestion by the chief of the party and views taken by Margaret Alva and others there is no concern about the poor in the state where 60% of the population is living in slums with no realization of the open, public promises made after demolition, the leader and the elected representative seem to be unbothered of the lakhs of their votes facing hell. Their accusation against the people's movement to be only for publicity is only to be ridiculed.

Sharad Pawar too had stated that slums should not have been demolished without proper rehabilitation for the slum dwellers. None of the NCP leader seems to be coming forward to take any action in the matter.

With R. R. Patil and the Home Minister, there has not either an independent enquiry or action against the accused officials regarding the brutal lathi charge on the 6th of April. Shiv Sena and BJP of course fully support these demolitions and support the action and decisions against the poor. This is a glimpse of today's politics in our country. Protestors will watch the politicians and will take to teaching a lesson, no doubt!

SONIA GANDHI CHAIRPESON NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL

2, MOTILAL NEHRU PLACE NEW DELHI ??“ 110 001 No 693/CP/NAC/05

7th, May 2005 Dear Chief Minister,

A number of groups have met me regarding the problems of slum dwellers in Mumbai. I would like to make the following suggestions in this regard:
-

?· About 4 lakh people are said to be on the pavements because their tenements were demolished in the past months. They could be allowed to re-occupy the lands they were occupying earlier till the state government finds alternative sites for them and constructs appropriate housing for them ?· A survey could be conducted quickly among those who have been rendered homeless to identify those who are pre ??“ 1995 settlers. The state government and representatives of the affected people and NGO??™s could conduct the survey jointly. ?· The government could give those pre ??“ 1995 settlers who have been rendered homeless in the first round in demolitions some reasonable compensation in cash. ?· Cases instituted against the slum dwellers could be withdrawn immediately. ?· The housing to be constructed for the pre ??“ 1995 settlers who have been rendered homeless could be designed innovatively to keep costs down and yet provide hygienic and comfortable accommodation. The alleged estimate of the government of Rs 24,000 crores is excessive and unimaginative. Costs can be reduced by 2/3rd without compromising on quality. Designs could be obtained from architects though a competitive process.

Please let me know the action taken by your government in these regards.

With good wishes

Yours sincerely,

Signed

Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra Mantralaya Mumbai.

SONIA GANDHI CHAIRPESON NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL

2, MOTILAL NEHRU PLACE NEW DELHI ??“ 110 001 No. 726/CP/NAC/05

May 13, 2005 Dear Chief Minister,

Please refer to my letter of 7th May, 2005 regarding the problem of slum clearence in Mumbai. The wordings of that letter may have given you the impression that the facilities mentioned therein are being suggested only for the pre ??“1995 settlers. However, I am given to understand that the State Government is accepting the cut-off date as 2000. Hence, the facilities suggested in the earlier letter may kindly be considered for all pre ??“
2000 settlers.

With good wishes

Yours sincerely,

Signed

Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra Mantralaya Mumbai.

Muslim feminist calls for ending Islam's 'ideological stalemate'

By Khalid Hasan
http://www.islamtoday.ca/doc/dailyTimes/DalilyTimes.htm

Washington: A literalist interpretation of the Quran that has gained ascendancy in much of the Islamic world has resulted in the violation of the holy book's overriding normative principles, such as delivery of justice to all, argues a young Muslim feminist progressive.

According to Farzana Hassan-Shahid, a Muslim writer based in Toronto, an "ideological stalemate" has been reached in the Muslim world. She believes that a "blatant contradiction" has emerged between the contextual injunctions of the Quran and its normative principles of justice and benevolence. "Needless to say, this has happened due to social conditions that are drastically different from those prevalent in seventh century Arabia. The Quran's contextual verses primarily sought to regulate conditions already in existence then. While these were effective in establishing social justice at that time, the same injunctions expressed as literalist applications in the form of laws such as the Qanooon-Shahadat Ordinance, or the Hadood and Blasphemy laws have created gross imbalances and injustices in contemporary Muslim societies."

The more pertinent question is why these people killing at all? To me it is irrelvent as the killed are muslisms or not- they are humans. I am sure the Quran forbids killing not just the believers. One can take your comment as saying if those that are killed are muslims same as the killers and that is why it is bad or it may not be as bad if the killed were non muslims.

"Never should a believer kill a believer; .." So says the Holy Quran in verse 004.092 We are also told in verse 005.032, "if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people:..."

So what kind of Muslims they are who are killing Muslims at places of worship in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq etc. They appear to be mercenaries hird by the enemies of Islam but posing as Muslims belonging to Taliban or some group of freedom fighters.
