[1] From: Sukla Sen <suklasen@yahoo.com> Date: Tue Jun 7, 2005 Subject: Breaking News: Advani Submits Resignation as the BJP Chief [Quite unlike his past track records, this time Advani has refused, at least as yet, to retract or obfuscate - not even implicitly. So he took a calculated and deliberate risk. But the million dollar question is "why"? There's no point chanting the old mantra: "this is all part of a stage-managed show". It's also next to impossible that he has undergone a genuine change of heart. Perhaps we'll have to wait a bit, without succumbing to the lures of instant and easy theorisation, for a credible answer to emerge.] http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php? newsid=48124 Read full text of Advani's resignation letter Press Trust of India Posted online: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 1309 hours IST Updated: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 1755 hours IST New Delhi, June 7: Following is the text of L K Advani's letter of resignation as BJP president addressed to party general secretary Sanjay Joshi. My Dear Sanjayji, I am writing this letter just before departing from Karachi. I have decided to request the party to relieve me of presidentship. I am sure acceding to my request would be in the best interests of the great cause I have served all my life, as also of the party which has given me so much. I have taken this decision after pondering the matter very carefully. And I believe that my visit to Pakistan last week has immensely reinforced the initiatives taken by the NDA government to bring about peace and normalcy with Pakistan. I have not said or done anything in Pakistan which I need to retract or review. http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php? newsid=48163 Shiv Sainiks carry out Advani's mock funeral Press Trust of India Posted online: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 1914 hours IST Updated: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 1919 hours IST Varanasi, June 7: Protesting BJP chief L. K. Advani's statements praising Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah's secular credentials, Shiv Sena activists here today took out a mock funeral procession of the saffron party leader and later cremated the effigy on the banks of the Ganga. A group of Shiv Sainiks, led by district unit president Gulshan Kapur, took out the mock funeral procession of Advani and cremated the effigy at Rajendra Prasad Ghat to protest the BJP leader's praise of Jinnah during his visit to Pakistan. The slogan-shouting Shiv Sainiks said his appreciation of Jinnah and regret over demolition of the Babri Masjid had "hurt the sentiments of Hindus" in the country. They reminded the BJP leader of his party's rise to power at the national level on the Ramjanambhoomi issue. Charging Advani of trying to reflect a secular image of himself by abandoning he Hindutva agenda of the party, they claimed its dilution of the "core issue" had thrown the party out of power and now its very existence would be threatened in the wake of Advani's views on Jinnah. http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php? newsid=48116#compstory Vajpayee supports Advani on Jinnah Press Trust of India Posted online: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 1118 hours IST Updated: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 1612 hours IST Atal Behari Vajpayee Manali, June 7: Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today endorsed L K Advani's comments on Pakistan's founder leader Mohammad Ali Jinnah saying that the BJP president's remarks were being "misinterpreted." "Whatever has been said, is being misinterpreted. His remarks on Jinnah are being misinterpreted," Vajpayee told reporters at Bhuntar airport near Kullu before his departure for Delhi. Describing Jinnah as the "Janak (father)" of Pakistan Vajpayee said the Qaid-e-Azam had wanted the people of India and Pakistan to live in harmony, but his intentions were not supported by other Pakistani leaders. Senior Congress leaders like Sarojini Naidu had also made similar remarks about Jinnah, who had played an important role in the freedom struggle, Vajpayee said adding that everyone had a right to freedom of expression and he did not mind it. Advani's comments on Jinnah during his weeklong visit to Pakistan had raised the hackles of the Sangh Parivar, which has demanded that he withdraw his comments. --------------------------------------------------------------- [2] From: "Arif N. Khan" <ank2000pk@...> Wed Jun 8, 2005 Subject: Advani Resigns under pressure of Hindu extremists Advani quits as BJP chief NEW DELHI: India"s Hindu nationalist party chief Lal Krishna Advani resigned on Tuesday as the party chief after drawing fire for praising Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, reports said. Advani submitted his resignation to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after Hindu hardliners called on him to withdraw his remarks lauding Quaid-i-Azam, following his return here on Monday from a week-long visit to Pakistan. "Acceding to my request would be in the best interest of the great cause I have served all my life," Advani, 77, said in his letter of resignation that threw the BJP into turmoil. Advani said that "I had not said or done anything in Pakistan, which I need to retract" and his trip had "immensely reinforced" initiatives by the former ruling BJP-led coalition to make peace with the country. Advani has said he will remain leader of the opposition National Democratic Alliance for the time being. Advani angered hardliners by describing Quaid-i-Azam as "a great man" who had "created history". "There"s no Hindu who does not know Pakistan was formed because of Jinnah, and Advani did the unthinkable by paying floral tribute to him," said Ashok Singhal, chief of the hardline Vishwa Hindu Parishad or World Hindu Council. The BJP asked him to reconsider his decision. BJP Vice-President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the party had reached "its current heights" due to Advani"s contribution and asked him to reconsider but Advani told NDTV television network his decision was firm. And, endorsing Advani"s views on Quaid-i-Azam as a "secular leader", former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said that Pakistan"s founding father had always been a supporter of Indo-Pak friendship. "Whatever has been said is being misinterpreted. The BJP president"s remarks on Jinnah are being misinterpreted," said Vajpayee at Bhuntar airport near Kullu before his departure for Delhi. Describing Jinnah as the "Janak (father)" of Pakistan, Vajpayee said the Quaid-i-Azam had wanted the people of India and Pakistan to live in harmony. Vajpayee said that everyone had a right to freedom of expression and he did not mind it. The ruling Congress-led alliance called Advani"s resignation an "internal matter." http://jang.com.pk/thenews/index.html ----------- Advani quits, but partymen say no Satish Misra and S. Satyanarayanan Tribune News Service http://www.tribuneindia.com/2005/20050608/main1.htm New Delhi, June 7 A rattled and bewildered BJP rallied behind party President L. K. Advani imploring him not to press his resignation for ???being relieved from the party post.??? With former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the vanguard trying to prevail upon Mr Advani not to quit as BJP President, there were scores of meetings throughout the day to find a way out of the impasse. However, Mr Advani remained firm in his resolve to resign as the BJP President though several senior leaders expressed confidence that Mr Vajpayee would succeed at some point of time if not immediately in convincing him to relent from his resolve in the interest of the party. A meeting of the party office-bearers along with the BJP Parliamentary Board has been convened here tomorrow at 5 pm to consider Mr Advani??™s letter in which he has asked to be relieved from the party Presidentship, organisation Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu told mediapersons after remaining huddled with Mr Vajpayee and other office-bearers. ???We are confident that Mr Advani will accept the wish of the party and take back his resignation,??? a flustered Mr Naidu observed. ???Mr Vajpayee told us that Mr Advani was firm on his request to be relieved from the post of party Presidentship.??? He said the BJP strongly condemns VHP leader Praveenbhai Togadia??™s anti-Advani statements and taken exception to the acerbic language used by Mr Togadia. Mr Naidu praised the role and ???yeoman service??? of Mr Advani in building and expanding the base of the BJP. Mr Naidu praised the contribution of both Mr Advani and Mr Vajpayee to the nation, the cause of Hindutva as well the nationalist forces and the party. Mr Advani??™s letter to BJP General Secretary Sanjay Joshi offers an insight to the Leader of the Opposition??™s mind when he remains firm on his comments and observations on Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah. ???I have taken this decision after pondering the matter very carefully. And I believe that my visit to Pakistan last week has immensely reinforced the initiatives taken by the NDA Government to bring about peace and normalcy with Pakistan. I have not said or done anything in Pakistan which I need to retract or review???, the one page letter said. ???All the party leaders are of the view that he should withdraw his resignation. They have met former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and discussed the issue. The request of all the leaders, including the allies of the BJP, is that Advani should withdraw the resignation,??? party spokesman Prakash Javdekar told newspersons at the party headquarters. The spokesman maintained that ???Advaniji is still the President. There will be no more questions and answers.??? Asked about reports that Mr Naidu has been asked to officiate as President, he pointed out that ???he has been coordinating party affairs earlier also.??? Soon after his return here from Manali after a short vacation, Mr Vajpayee spoke to Mr Advani on the telephone after senior party leaders had urged him to persuade Mr Advani to reconsider his decision. While confirming Mr Vajpayee??™s call, Mr Advani??™s aides said that they were not aware of the contents of the telephonic conversation between the two leaders. Making a statement at Bhunter airport, Mr Vajpayee backed Mr Advani??™s statement on Pakistan and its founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah who had played an important role in the freedom struggle. The former Prime Minister also said Mr Advani??™s remarks had been ???misinterpreted. His remarks on Jinnah are being misinterpreted???. A senior leader said Mr Advani has played the role of a ???statesman??? in Pakistan as his statements and observations during his stay in the neighbouring country would go a long way in facilitating the peace process. ??? The real villain of the piece are Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders like Ashok Singhal and Acharya Giriraj Kishore and their loudspeaker Praveenbhai Togadia???, the senior leader said adding that ???Mr Advani has initiated a process through which many temples are being restored in Pakistan and the VHP is trying to thwart the whole process. Mr Advani??™s statements and comments during his trip to Pakistan would contribute to the conflict resolution process with Pakistan???, he said. Even as efforts were on to persuade Mr Advani not to press his resignation, inspired rumours suggested that former party president and Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi was being backed by the Sangh Parivar to take over the reins of the BJP. While Mr Advani??™s letter to the party General Secretary said ???I am sure acceding to my request (of being relieved from the party presidentship) would be in the best interests of the great cause I have served all my life, as also of the party which has given me so much???, such a decision can only be considered by the party working committee. Barring protests and welcome statements from the VHP leaders, the Rashtriya Swayamsevk Sangh has maintained that it had not demanded Mr Advani??™s resignation. ???Unfortunately, RSS supremo K Sudarshan does not enjoy a moral clout of his predecessors like Golwalkar, Balasaheb Deoras and Professor Rajendara Singh ???Rajjubhaia???. Sudarshanji is not in a position to rein in the extremist elements of the VHP???, a BJP senior leader observed adding that ???this is not a BJP crisis but of the entire Sangh parivar???. Meanwhile, Acharya Giriraj Kishore commenting on the resignation of Mr Advani said ??? it is in line with the wishes of the people and the party workers that he (Mr Advani) has resigned and I am sure a principled man like him will not withdraw his resignation.??? Asked about VHP firebrand leader Togadia terming Mr Advani a ???traitor???, Acharya Kishore said ???if anybody has said anything like that then we apologise. On who would be the VHP??™s choice to lead the BJP, Mr Kishore said ???It is BJP??™s headache but whoever it is he or she should be committed to the Sangh??™s ideology.??? VHP welcomes resignation, RSS denies pressure New Delhi, June 7 The VHP leader, Mr Praveen Togadia, today welcomed the resignation of Mr L .K. Advani from the presidentship of the BJP and said ?????™leaders of his ilk??™??™ should not be permitted to hold key posts. Mr Togadia told mediapersons that Mr Advani??™s eulogising Mohd Ali Jinnah ?????™who had been responsible for the death of one million Hindus,??™??™ was unforgivable and not in the interests of the nation |
