It remains to be seen whether the parivar again gives him whole-hearted support or the events of the past four days further fuel BJP factionalism Just 10 days ago, it was made to look like the prodigal son??™s return to Pakistan. It has now turned out to be his return to the parivar. ???Ten days that shook the Sangh???, screamed a headline the other day. It was actually four days that shook a frenzied media. As Lal Krishna Advani and his ???resignation??? from the august post of the Bharatiya Janata Party president made waves all around, this scribe opted for silence. As the pundits vied with one another admiring the former deputy prime minister??™s daring departure from the ideology of the far right ???family??™ (parivar), this columnist just could not share their enthusiasm. As soothsayers went about prophesying a split in the BJP, the drama seemed to be running to a familiar and far less exciting script. The curtain went up with Advani sending in his resignation letter on the morning of June 7. He had landed in New Delhi the previous day and, even at the airport, reiterated his adherence to statements made in Pakistan that had stirred the hornet??™s nest. The ???debate??? (his description of the rank diatribes greeting the statements), he said defiantly, was welcome, but it was going to make no difference to his views. The resignation followed the furious reaction from the non-BJP sections of the parivar, mainly the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the patriarchal Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In his letter, Advani said he saw no need to ???retract or review??? any of his statements. For those who came in late, the statements in Pakistan made three main points. The first was about the Babri Masjid, with the leader of the Ayodhya movement describing the date of its demolition as the ???saddest day of my life???. The second was about, ???the unalterable reality??? of India and Pakistan as separate and sovereign states, with Advani adding that it was time to ???leave behind the bitterness and tensions of the past???. The third, and the most talked-about, was his tribute to Pakistan??™s founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah. Advani called the Quaid-e-Azam not only a history-maker but also a secularist by striving. Advani??™s resignation elicited little supportive response from within his party. Yes, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was said to have come to the aid of the beleaguered leader. Vajpayee, however, only said Advani??™s remarks on Jinnah had been ???misinterpreted???. Advani himself made no such allegation and all others agreed that the statements suffered from no vagueness. Vajpayee said Advani had talked only about Jinnah as a freedom fighter. But the contentious statements were about the Quaid-e-Azam??™s post-independence role. The media refrain until June 9 was that Advani would not budge from his belligerently neo-secular stand. Two factors were cited in support of this belief. The first was that he was the Iron Man of the BJP ??” the Loha Purush, as loyalists asserted their devotion with a dash of Sanskrit. The second, stressed more by the media, related to the widely perceived purpose of Advani??™s Pakistan mission. The mission, it appeared to most observers, was an image makeover. As a minority including myself might have put it, the attempt was to make a Vajpayee of Advani. The former prime minister, too, had a past of communal rabble-rousing, a past that sustained propaganda has managed to erase. The hope was that the Pakistan trip could metamorphose Advani, too, into a leader more acceptable to allies and the people at large. Advani, however, had distinct disadvantages. He had started a trifle too late. And he had to shed the heavy burden of a hard-line image, which had helped him play the perfect foil to the former prime minister of two terms. The hurdles proved insuperable. They could have been crossed only with the help of the RSS. For decades after all, the patriarch of the parivar had discreetly helped Vajpayee play his delicate political balancing act. But there were definite limits to such compromises. Not long ago, RSS chief KS Sudarshan himself made these limits very clear when in an interview, he called upon both Vajpayee and Advani to quit the BJP leadership. In these columns, we have looked for the real reason behind the call for renunciation. We found that the parivar would like to launch a political campaign against the people-driven India-Pakistan peace process before it was too late. If the RSS feared that the Vajpayee-Advani leadership could not lead such a campaign effectively after their years in a New Delhi coalition, it was hardly reassured by Advani??™s statements in Pakistan. The RSS has taken particular umbrage at Advani??™s suggestion that ???Akhand (Undivided) Bharat??? had become an irrelevant and outdated concept. It is an idea the parivar needs to keep its communal and militarist powder always dry. It cannot possibly agree to abandon it. Advani has now withdrawn his resignation. It only took a bit of browbeating by the parivar and its less abashed loyalists in the BJP, to make him eat the humble pie. He has accepted a party resolution, which purports to praise him and his Pakistan mission but also reiterates the parivar positions that run counter to the cause of South Asian peace. The prodigal son has returned to the parivar. It remains to be seen whether the parivar again gives him the whole-hearted support or the events of the past four days further fuel BJP factionalism. Now, it has happened to the celebrated film maker Rakesh Sharma ("Final Solution") - while taking a stroll in Manhattan. Sign The Petition: A renewed Appeal Enclosed below is the text of a petition to be sent to authorities in New York, Washington DC and New Delhi to protest against Rakesh Sharma's harrowing experience with cops from NYPD. His seems to be a clear case of racial profiling, which, inspite of explicit denials by the US establishment, is a rampant practice. Please lend your support by raising your voice against harassment of individuals through draconian powers being exercised by the US law enforcement agencies in the name of War on Terror. Please sign the petition by going to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/980334649 . Please circulate this petition to others in your addressbook as well. Petition text : We are shocked to hear about the intimidation and harassment faced by the well-known Indian film-maker Rakesh Sharma in New York on May 13, 2005. NYPD personnel 'detained and interrogated' him for 3 hours and subjected him to verbal and physical abuse. The details of the incident can be found in the formal complaint filed by him on May 16, 2005 with The Civilian Complaint Review Board, New York. (http://rakeshfilm.com/NYPD/index.htm) Mr. Rakesh Sharma has been traveling in several countries including USA to screen his film ??“ Final Solution ( http://www.rakeshfilm.com/finalsolution.htm). The film has been screened at over 60 international film festivals and has won over a dozen awards. On May 12, 2005, he was invited to present his film in New York at a screening co-organized by Columbia University and New School. As is clear from the sequence of events, the next day, Mr. Sharma was taking street shots of traffic in Manhattan, less than a block away from his hotel, when an NYPD detective accosted him. Even though Mr. Sharma answered each query, produced his identification papers and offered to put the detective in touch with his hosts in New York, he had to face hostile questioning, threats and public humiliation. The detective confiscated his passport, physically pushed him, snatched his camera and among other things said to him: "We know how to deal with you guys, asshole", clearly a racist remark. Though Mr. Sharma was not formally arrested, he was not free to leave, not allowed to make any phone calls and was 'interrogated' by 2 more sets of officers. Finally, detectives of the 'cold case squad' at the 17th precinct illegally previewed the footage shot by him even after his identity had firmly and formally been established. We would like to register a strong protest against the NYPD and urge you to immediately conduct an enquiry into the episode. We find the ethic of interrogation adopted by the NYPD to be violent, insidious and oppressive . We feel that the NYPD not just violated several of Mr. Sharma's rights but may possibly have indulged in racial profiling. According to Mr. Sharma ??“ " Perhaps I was accosted and interrogated because of my brown skin, my beard and the fact that I had a camera". We urge the United States Department of Justice through its Civil Rights Division to respond, especially in view of its " Initiative to Combat Post-9/11 Discriminatory Backlash". Mayor Bloomberg, we urge you to take immediate punitive action against officers responsible for the incident. We hope that a formal apology will be tendered to Mr. Sharma and due compensation will be offered to him for the mental and physical distress suffered by him. May we also urge you to take formal steps to ensure that visitors to New York City are not subjected to such harassment and intimidation by NYPD in the future. We would like directives to be issued to law enforcement agencies to put an immediate stop to the practice of racial profiling. We oppose and resist the perpetuation of newer and more grotesque forms of violence by state agencies in the name of national security and protest strongly against the consequent violation of peoples' civil liberties and legal rights. May we suggest that such actions are not just an assault on the US Constitution but on the very concepts of liberty and freedom of _expression. -- Rakesh www.rakeshfilm.com --------------------------------------------- [5] From: Parvez Jamasji <parvez1942@yahoo.com> Date: Sat Jun 11, 2005 Subject: History's Lessons History is a learning process which we use not to repeat it, especially not the glorious part. 40 & 35 years have elapsed since 62, 65 & 71 Wars so there is little "danger" where historians would offend residual sensitivities on the subcontinent. I am sure we also have passed the mile stone of Time which kept History under wraps. Could we have something akin to Henderson Brooke report ? This is also true on a World stage where the self inflicted time specific, secrecy clauses have lapsed. 1. We would like to know the details what were the reasons (specific crimes) for which German General Staff were executed ? 2. Was there evidence that was so compelling, in today's laws & ethos; to warrant such an execution ? 3. How many German & especially Japanese senior officers were recruited by the victorious to help in administration ?? 4. Where there any axis officers who would have been justifiably executed for their part in the mal treatment of their POWs but escaped justice by " cooperating " with their conquerors in the administration of their own countries or for "other reasons" ? Can any one point me in the right direction on this subject ? Thank you for your time. Parvez Jamasji |
