RJD leader beats pregnant Dalit woman to death

Amarnath Tewary / Patna

Lalu brand of social Justice: Party leader and ex-MLA beat a Dalit woman to death . Rashtriya Janata Dal chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav has self-assuredly been the sole proprietor and upholder of social justice, equality and the like. This has proved instrumental in selling his brand of politics for more than 15 years in Bihar .

His own party leader and former MLA espousing the cause of social justice and equality beat a young, pregnant Dalit woman to death in his own backyard. The former RJD MLA Sunil Kumar Pushpam allegedly thrashed a Dalit woman who was pregnant. Manju Devi, wife of Binod Sada, was beaten so brutally with a rifle butt on Tuesday that she succumbed to her injuries and died in the hospital on Saturday. Her fault was that she was a little slow in moving out of the way to let the MLA's jeep pass on a muddy village tract .

The hapless Dalit woman in her mid-twenties, of Checheni-Beethan village in Samastipur was on her way to the market when the MLA's jeep came from the back and honked at her on the Sirsia bundh of the district. Maju took some time to move to a dry place before she could let the jeep pass. This made the MLA lose his temper and in a fit of rage, he beat her.

Sunil Kumar had won the last Assembly elections held in February, from Hasanpur constituency in Samastipur, on an RJD ticket. He defeated Ran Nandan Mandal of Lok Janshakti Party by over 6,000 votes. According to the complaint lodged with the local police station, the infuriated MLA Sunil Kumar Pushpam, who had won the February elections by promising uplift of Dalits and social justice, got off his vehicle and began to thrash Manju with his rifle butt. His men, in the meanwhile, stood guard.   Manju was badly injured and had a miscarriage on the spot. She was left bleeding profusely. Later, she was admitted to a nearby hospital in Begusarai district, where she breathed her last. Sources in the hospital said that Manju died because of internal haemorrhage and rupture of veins. Earlier, Manju's husband Binod Sada lodged a complaint against the MLA with the local Beethan police station. Despite repeated attempts, the police in-charge could not be contacted for registering the details of the complaint. However, the Superintendent of Police, Samastipur Yogendra Paswan said, "Once the medical reports come, actions will definitely be taken." The district police chief admitted that the incident really took place and he came to know of the incident "through the media". The situation, at the moment, is quite tense in the Checheni-Beethan area as the local Dalits have organised themselves demanding immediate arrest of the MLA and compensation to the victim's family. "This gruesome incident has shown the feudal mindset of the State and how the RJD and its president Lalu Prasad have been ruling the State in the name of Dalit empowerment is a big question mark. Is this the social justice Lalu Prasad has been talking about?" asked many of the protestors in Samastipur

In Bihar , pregnant Dalit woman??™s death is fodder for RJD poll ticket fight
Monday August 8 2005 09:01 IST

BITHAN (SAMASTIPUR): With Bihar polls approaching and the clamour for Assembly tickets already on, the tragic death of a pregnant Dalit woman in Samastipur has become a flashpoint between two local RJD leaders eyeing the same ticket.
Sunil Kumar Pushpam, RJD MLA from Hasanpur in the dissolved Assembly, has been named in a complaint lodged at the Rosera sub-divisional court. The charge against him : he and his men used rifle butts to assault Manju Devi of Bithan village on August 2 because she failed to move out of the road when his jeep started honking. Manju Devi, who ??????disappeared??™??™ after filing the complaint, later surfaced at a private clinic in Begusarai, 70 km away. She was referred to the Samastipur Sadar Hospital where she died on Saturday night. She had already had a miscarriage before her death. Pushpam denies the charge. He says he was in Patna at the time of the incident and that it??™s all the handiwork of Bithan mukhiya and RJD leader Ashok Yadav who??™s out ??????involve me in a false case to secure a party ticket.??™??™ Ashok Yadav, says the police, is an absconder in a murder case and so they have no clue to his whereabouts. But the mukhiya??™s track record, according to Bithan police station in-charge Raj Kumar Singh Yadav, is quite long: he??™s an accused in 17 cases of murder and dacoity. While the police deny that they refused to lodge Manju Devi??™s complaint??”the station in-charge says she never even approached them??”the fact is that a complaint, naming Pushpam, was filed at the Rosera sub-divisional court before her death.Such is the fear of inviting trouble that none in Bithan village now wish to discuss the incident. Her body has still not been brought to the village. Her husband works in Delhi , trying to eke a living.Whatever the truth, the fact remains that a pregnant woman is dead. And that two RJD leaders are using it to settle scores for a party ticket to the polls.

Babus have forged caste certificates
Sunday August 7 2005 10:10 IST

BHUBANESWAR: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes will soon expose a scam of alleged submission of forged Scheduled Caste (SC) certificates by civil servants. Chairman of the Commission Suraj Bhan, who is on a three-day visit to the State, told mediapersons here on Saturday that a large number of people have entered into civil services - Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and Allied Services - by submitting bogus caste certificates.

Several such cases have come to the notice of the Commission, which had written to Chief Secretaries of all the states two years back requesting them to furnish a detailed list of the IAS and IPS officers who have submitted SC certificates.
Despite repeated reminders, no State has responded so far, Bhan said and added that he has again requested all the Chief Secretaries to submit the list of the officers in their states who retired in July. The Commission will summon the Chief Secretaries if they failed to comply and if necessary, he will be forced to issue non-bailable warrants.

Replying to a question, Bhan said the Commission has also received complaints against a Member of Parliament from Bijnore in Uttar Pradesh. The MP concerned in his affidavit has admitted that he does not belong to the Scheduled Caste, but he is still representing a constituency which is reserved for SCs.
Demanding penal provisions in the Reservation of Posts and Services for SC/ST and OBC in Government Services Bill, 2004, introduced in Rajya Sabha in December last, Bhan said without such provision, the proposed law will be toothless.

The Bill is the only exception where there is no penal clauses. There will be no action if any Government officers violated the reservation rules, he said.  He demanded inclusion of penal provisions of six months imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine in the Bill which has been referred to a Parliamentary Standing Committee without discussion in the House. www.newindpress.com 070805

Towards a cultural agenda for Dalits

Madurai , Aug 7 : Formulating a framework for a cultural agenda, aimed at empowerment and liberation of the sub-altern and subordinated communities, is a prerequisite for the Dalit political parties and movements to move forward on the road to social change, a recent conference of academicians and activists has concluded.

The Dalit Intellectual Collective (DIC), an initiative of socially committed academicans, at its national conference held at Vagamon in Kerala during July end has decided to take up this challenging task.

Dalit cultural assertion has unfortunately not received the due attention that political assertion has got and this necessitates the need to explore areas beyond electoral politics, S Karuppiah, Secretary of Village Educational Service Association (VEESA), a Nagapattinam-based NGO, involved in organising the three-day conference told newspersons here today.

According to Mr Karuppiah, the trend was not confined to Tamil Nadu alone but pervasive in every region of the country. Hence, the agenda to be prepared through a national debate would draw upon the liberative and egalitarian features that distinguishes Dalit culture from the hegemonic Brahminic-Hindutva culture, he added.

Cultural assertion of Dalits finds expression in various forms such as creative writing, community life, mode of political mobilisation and so on. Despite the existence of sub-caste structures, Dalit identity continued to be relatively egalitarian, he pointed out. While contesting the hegemonic culture and institutions it also provided a valid critique of the 'monolithic construction' of the non-brahmin movement as is the case of Tamil Nadu, Mr Karuppiah said.

Indians warned against carrying scriptures to Saudi

Hyderabad, Aug 3 (IANS) Indians travelling to Saudi Arabia have been warned not to carry religious scriptures, photographs or idols.

An official statement issued here Wednesday said that religious activities in private residences or undertaking missionary or preaching activities are banned in Saudi Arabia and could invite stringent punishment.

C.R. Banswal, principal secretary (political) to the Andhra Pradesh government, said the Indian ambassador in Riyadh had said that detention cases of Indian nationals on allegations of involvement in religious activities in that country were increasing.

The statement said the Saudi religious police recently arrested nine Indians for preaching Christianity.

"He (the ambassador) has therefore expressed the view that it is urgent and important that all Indian nationals be forewarned prior to their departure from India against carrying any religious scripture, photographs or idols with them to Saudi Arabia," said the statement.

The ambassador said the Indian nationals should also be strictly briefed against organising group religious activities in private residences or undertaking missionary or preaching activity.
"This would be a major preventive measure in promoting the welfare of the Indian nationals in Saudi Arabia," the statement added.

I have NOT yet met a person who thinks that our Independence was a gift.

It would also be an insult & a slur on our Mahatma, winner of freedom, along with others & recognised the world over as such.

Thanks for your time

15th August,Independence day of India is approaching. On this day we celebrate our freedom from British colonialism. But a school of thought in our country believes that Indian nationhood is the gift of British Raj,without which the concept of Indian nationhood could have not been achieved.Though persons belonging to this school of thought have their own logic and arguments,I am not convinced.I do believe that our nationhood has its prsence for quite a long time much prior to our country being subjugated by forces.I owe our nationhood to the great Indian civization. But it was not confined to a certain geographical area. Our nationhood was at that time manifested by way of cultural nationalism. The core essence of our modern nationhood is UNITY IN DIVERSITY.A common thread that binds us as a garland. But again, what is the nature of this thread of unity? What are the materials this common tread is made of?
This is an honest endevour on my part to initiate a halthy and meaningful debate.I urge all group members to participate and contribute their valuable and thought provoking views, arguments.Let all of us remember that TRUTH comes out after clash of ideas.
