In New Orleans, seven months after Katrina, senior citizens are living in their cars. WWL-TV introduced us to Korean War veteran Paul Morris, 74, and his wife Yvonne, 66. They have been sleeping in their 2 door sedan since January. They have been waiting that long for FEMA contractors to unlock the 240 square foot trailer in their yard and connect the power so they can sleep inside it in front of their devastated home.

Apostasy Laws – An Injury To Islam By Muslims By Mirza A. Beg

http://www.countercurrents.org/beg300306.htm

It is important and valid to oppose all the encroachments by others on the Muslim lands and Islam, but it is suicidal to use it as an excuse to cover the festering wound intolerance. The more grievous fault is lies within

Subject: Hussain's nude paintings hurt feelings, says court

Indian Law makes hurting religious feelings a criminal offense. Such laws should be changed. They are like blasphemy laws which criminalise speech that in most of the world would be legal.

Hussain's nude paintings hurt feelings, says court Thursday March 30 2006 00:00 IST
   PTI
MEERUT: A local Meerut court on Wednesday prima facie found artist MF Hussain guilty of tampering with the feelings of the Hindu community and asked police to register a case against him.

The order came on a petition filed by Prem Pal Singh of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on March 20 alleging that the artist had portrayed Hindu gods and goddesses in an "objectionable" manner in his paintings.

Singh's counsel Ramkumar Sharma told reporters that the court had found Hussain guilty under various sections of IPC in the case filed in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate AK Pathak.

He said that according to these sections, Hussain had been found guilty of "making objectionable paintings to hurt the feeling of a community and of disturbing communal harmony".

Nepal: People’s Army marches through provincial city centre

27 March 2006. A World To Win News Service. The Nepal Maoist weekly Janadesh reports that Nepal’s People’s Liberation Army staged a march through the city centre of Gularia, the district headquarters of Bardiya in western Nepal 21 March. Gularia is a medium-sized city, by Nepali standards, situated around 50 kilometres west of Nepalgunj, the Nepali city that serves as India’s business gateway to western Nepal. Gularia itself is less than five kilometres from the Indo-Nepal boarder. The Indian state has already set up its armed forces across the border areas to control the Maoist revolutionaries.

Industrial Disputes and Responsibility of the Media

It seems that using advertising budget as leverage the Public Relations officers of Habib Bank prevailed upon the leading dailies to black out or play low key in reporting the support given by Mutehadda Quami Movement to the Employees Federation in their dispute with the management. The employees had been observing two hours' token strike. On the other hand the papers that do not usually get sufficient ads from the bank published the news prominently, The Employees' Federation is displaying the clipping prominently in almost all the branches.

It is alleged that in contravention of the terms of sale with the Government, the bank had unilaterally decided to outsource various jobs to outside service providers who pay much lower salaries and poor fringe benefits and transfer thousands of employees to outside agencies on temporary contracts by terminating their services with the bank.

It is also alleged that hundreds of officers have been transferred to far-flung areas as a tactic for obtaining resignations and in their place the officers of Isamili sect are being posted or recruited. The dispute with the employees' federation was referred to NIRC and the management has been stopped by the commission from terminating the employees.

As far as media is concerned people expect they would be given true and unbiased news and there would be no black out to please the business giants or the Government. Many people are still critical of inaction of the Government on the unilateral debit of RS. 50 per month in case of poor account holders who cannot maintain minimum prescribed balance.
Such debits had been started without giving any written notice to the account holders. It is rumored that within a short period such debits would cover the purchasing price of the bank that government got from its sale and the wisdom behind the deal is being looked up with skeptism and doubts.
