Don't twist ASI report: court By Our Special Correspondent NEW DELHI OCT. 16. The matter of the Archaeological Survey of India's report on its excavation in Ayodhya is sub-judice and should not be interpreted to suit anyone's interests the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court said today. While passing the orders on a petition from the Sunni Central Wakf Board, a three-Judge Bench said the court was yet to decide "whether the ASI report is to be confirmed or rejected or how it will be dealt with". In the interregnum, it expected "every responsible person including leaders — religious and non-religious — not to issue any statement pertaining to the ASI report or interpret or twist it to suit his interest." The Wakf Board's petition followed the VHP's claims that the ASI report provided "proof" that a temple had existed at the site prior to the construction of the Babri Masjid. It had attached to its petition a VHP press release which expressed the hope that there would be an "amicable settlement" of the dispute as there was "after all, a temple before the disputed structure". The petition had also asked the court to direct the Uttar Pradesh Government to ensure that no public rally was held at Ayodhya tomorrow and to maintain the status quo at the site. In reference to this, the court directed the State Government to take all steps to ensure that "no one is allowed to derive any advantage out of the situation" and that the Supreme Court's order to maintain the status quo of the site was upheld. The U.P. Chief Minister's announcement reported from Lucknow that the VHP's gathering would be permitted 5 km from the disputed site falls in line with the court's October 10 direction "not to allow congregation on or around the disputed site". The court, however, also directed the Government to ensure that "no religious activity of any kind by any one, either symbolic or actual" is permitted "at or around the disputed site". Further, it ordered that while the "usual puja and darshan is not disturbed" the Government must make certain that "large numbers of persons [are] not allowed at one point of time in or around the disputed site".
