I used to think TN was completely backward, but the recent agitation in the north has proved that TN is light years ahead. This is the other side of the reservations story. The forwarded mail show the myth of reservations in Tamil Nadu C.P. You would be hard pressed to name one Dalit leader or achiever from Tamil Nadu - the state with the highest reservations - close to 80% of seats are reserved in some manner or other and this state has been ruled for the best part of 40 years by OBCs. The current ruling front ( then in opposition) refused to accomodate any of the Dalit groups during the recent elections. ( the front encompassed dozens of caste based parties) and moreover threatened to raise the shop worn bogey of the hegemonistic Brahmin. - all of 3 % of the population I am all for reservations to uplift those who do not have the support infrastructure but the need of the hour is to ensure that those who can compete should not be allowed a free ride. Even back in 1985 when I cleared my class XII exams in Chennai, my schoolmates and neighbours availed the reservation facility. They had access to the best education and were definitely in the same social class as myself. This was 20 years ago and it is a clear that large numbers have since benefited from reservation and hence those already benefited should move out of this ambit and let the other deprived people have a chance. To use a classical example - there is no clause in the law that makes the children of Union Ministers Ramadoss, Laloo Yadav and Dayanithi Maran ineligible for reservation. Even then it shares some of its apprehensions with those expressed by Saroj Giri in his (or her) recent article in the EPW. Both consider the probability of the Nepali Maoists being converted into radical social democrats rather strong under the circumstances. And Saroj Giri, a self-proclaimed admirer of Nepali Maoism, responds with a far higher degree of horror at the prospect of Prachanda deviating from the glorious path trodden by Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot. So it's not only the US ambassador in Nepal who's talking of Pol Pot! And consequently Giri finds nothing amiss with the project of establishing a proletarian state in Nepal, where the proletariat constitutes only a small minority.] http://www.isj.org.uk/index.php4?id=197&issue=110 Nepal on the brink Issue: 110 Yuri Prasad For the last ten years the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal has been in the grip of a civil war, with the king and his Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) on one side, and the Communist Party of Nepal—Maoist (CPN -------------- [5] From: yogi sikand <ysikand@yahoo.com> Date: Mon Jun 5, 2006 Subject: Politics and the Tablighi Jamaat: Views from Doda [Jammu and Kashmir] Politics and the Tablighi Jamaat: Views from Doda Yoginder Sikand Doda district in the Jammu province of Jammu and Kashmir is unique in terms of its religious composition. In contrast to the rest of the state, Doda has a roughly equal Hindu and Muslim population. Many Muslims in the area are descendants of local converts but the majority are of Kashmiri origin, their forefathers having left the Valley in waves over the last three centuries because of famine, forced labour and political oppression. Over time, Hindus and Muslims in Doda evolved a shared culture. Yet, contradictions remained. Till 1947, most Muslims worked as impoverished sharecroppers in the fields of Hindu Rajput Hindu landlords, and most businessmen and shopkeepers were Hindu Banias. Hindu-Muslim relations in Doda underwent a drastic transformation after Partition. Some parts of the district, particularly Bhadarwah and Bhalesa, witnessed considerable bloodshed and forced migration in the wake of Partition, while areas such as the Kishtwar and Doda tehsils, remained largely peaceful. Under Shaikh Abdullah, radical land reforms and mass education led to a considerable improvement in the economic conditions of Muslims, as well as Dalits. This, along with the spread of Hindu and Islamic revivalist movements from outside, many of them rightwing and exclusivist, impacted on locally shared cultural traditions, leading to a re-definition of religious identities.
