Church set ablaze in Madhya Pradesh
http://www.newkerala.com/news3.php?action=fullnews&id=17862

Bhopal: A church has been set ablaze in remote Harda district in Madhya Pradesh, say reports.

"On June 30, extremists carrying torches broke into the church and set fire to a table, where 150 Bibles and hymnbooks were kept," a report quoted Jaidi Khan, the pastor of the church, as saying.

The miscreants were from a Hindu group, Dharam Sena (Religious Army), said the report.

However, superintendent of police K.D. Peshara told IANS that the Pentecostal Church had two rival groups and the attack was launched by one group on the other.

He also alleged that the culprits had burnt down the motorbike of the guard, and not the church building.

The Christian community in the state is facing increasing number of attacks by Hindu outfits, which allege missionaries are converting tribals forcibly and using allurement.

As many as six attacks were reported in June alone.

In Bhopal, Bajrang Dal leader Devendra Rawat had earlier disrupted the press conference of Indira Iyengar, member of the state minorities commission. The conference was to highlight the alleged gangrape rape of two Christian women in Khargone district on May 28. They were raped after their husbands refused to "reconvert" to Hinduism.

"We are worried about the increasing number of attacks," said Fr Anand Muttungal, spokesperson for the Catholic Bishops Conference of Madhya Pradesh.

"I fail to understand why law enforcement agencies are not acting against the perpetrators," he added.

Governor Balram Jakhar is reported to have written six letters to the state government seeking investigation into the reports of violence. The state home department, however, has either given a clean chit to the attackers or denied that the incidents ever took place.

Madhya Pradesh is among the few states where anti-conversion law is in force.

The power of philanthropy

The second richest person on the planet closing a deal with the wealthiest is an event the world must take note of. When the `deal' is about the former's plans to pledge the bulk of his $44 billion fortune to a philanthropy foundation run by the latter, the world must applaud. Warren Buffet's commitment to transfer as much as 85 per cent of his assets to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — the largest charitable donation in history — sends a powerful signal to the rest of world. The sheer size of the pledge has set a new benchmark for socially focussed generosity. Astonished observers are probably correct in thinking the commitment made by the "Oracle of Omaha" — known so on account of his uncanny ability to pick undervalued stocks — will energise the non-profit sector and create a new wave of philanthropy. In turning his personal wealth into something of great value to society, Mr. Buffet has resisted the temptation to start a foundation in his own name. This is an unusua lly wise move. It costs money to give away money and setting up a foundation is an expensive business; a recent survey conducted by the Chronicle of Philanthropy found that some major foundations consume almost 30 per cent of the money they disburse in administrative costs.

By pledging to channel the bulk of his fortunes to an existing foundation, the head of the conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway has signalled that in philanthropy, as in business, it is not necessary to reinvent the wheel. It would have been hard to find a better choice for philanthropic investment than the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which runs innovative programmes on health care and education for the global community and which has proved it can put its money to consistently beneficial use. Already the largest philanthropic foundation in the world, it will find the Buffet pledge enhancing its profile and giving it more power to bring about social change. In a way, the Buffet pledge is a gesture of confidence in his friend, Mr. Gates, who will step down his role in Microsoft in two years and work full-time for the Foundation. Mr. Buffet is in tune with the culture of `meritocracy', which values initiative and hard work; and is deeply opposed to an aristocracy created on the basis of inherited wealth. He is a strong opponent of efforts in the United States administration to repeal the estate tax. It is a culture that has encouraged many Americans to earmark substantial portions of their wealth for social purposes rather than passing it wholly to their children. It has created some of America's best-known philanthropists such as the oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, and others such as Irene Diamond and Joan Croc (who inherited business empires from their spouses). Much may be wrong with American business, but there is something to be learnt from its most successful businesspersons about the art of giving.

Subject: China's rail politics

Friends of Tibet (INDIA)" <support@friendsoftibet.org>
Dear friend,

As we work and network internationally against China's "Golmud-Lhasa
Railway" that is going to run on the July 1st. We learned that one
Tibetan
named Dawa Sigrist is responsible in selling luxury train journey
services
to prospective foreign tourist. Please check:
http://www.himalaya.ch/Reiseprogramme/railroad/train.html

Today with some members of Free Tibet Campaign, SFT UK and TYUK I went
to
LUXURY TRAVEL FAIR being held at the Olympia Hall in West London. GW
Travel runs a small information stall at the fair. We learned from GW
Travel (www.gwtravel.co.uk based in London with branches in many
countries). The stall promotes and will be selling tickets for the
Beijing-Gormo-Lhasa railway. To a question I raised about Tibetan
rights
the lady at the stall gave Swiss based Dawa Sigrist's involvement in
selling travel services as an example of Tibetan support to the
Beijing-Lhasa Railway.

On the 30th June Free Tibet campaign, SFT UK and TYUK will be jointly
working to protest outside the travel fair exhibition against GW and
Gormo-Lhasa railway. There will be more protest. On July 1st which is
being observed internationally as "Black day for Tibet", we would be
outside the Chinese embassy in London.

Remember July 1st, it's black arm band day. Do you have yours with you?
All Tibetans and Tibet supporters would be wearing black arm bands on
that
day to show our protest and solidarity with Tibetans in Tibet. Wear
your
arm band and take a picture and send it to info@rejecttherailway.org
see
more other supporters photos at www.rejecttherailway.org

Meanwhile please call, fax or email Dawa Sigrist and ask him to
withdraw
from this complicit act of China's railway invasion of Tibet. or write,

Marriage procession stalled in Rajasthan

http://www.newkerala.com/news3.php?action=fullnews&id=16731
Jaipur: Police Saturday arrested two people in Rajasthan for blocking the wedding procession of a Dalit man, injuring members of his group and destroying property, including generators and lights.

Miscreants obstructed the wedding procession coming from Sikar district at Rampura village in Shahpura, 60 km from here Friday, said eyewitnesses.

The Dalit bridegroom was forced to dismount his horse after being pelted with stones, they added.

Many people in the procession suffered injuries and were rushed to a local hospital in Shahpura following police intervention.

The police also arrested two people and registered a case against them under scheduled caste/scheduled tribe atrocities act. The procession then resumed under police protection.

"We have arrested two youths on the basis of a report lodged by the relatives of the bridegroom," said a police official from Shahpura.

The main cause of the injuries was a stampede that took place after the youth broke the generator and the procession lights, he added.

Include Christians and Muslims Dalits in the SC category : NCDHR
Indian Muslim
http://www.indianmuslims.info/news/2006/july/03/indian_muslim/include_christians_and_muslims_dalits_in_the_sc_category_ncdhr.html
New Delhi, July 3 (IndianMuslims.info)National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR) demanded that Christian and Muslim Dalits be included in the Scheduled Caste category and reservation and other benefits be extended to them.

65-70% of Christians in India have low caste origin. NCDHR noticed that even though Christian Dalits face same discrimination as Hindu Dalits they don't have access to the benefits that Hindu Dalits have. Similarly overwhelming majority of Indian Muslims have low caste background and high level of illiteracy make them most marginalized.

In a memorandum submitted by NCDHR to Justice Raganath Misra, Chairperson of National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities displayed concern that conversion to Christianity and Islam doesn't take away the discrimination that Dalits face. Removing of constitutional safeguards due to conversion is against the values of Secularism. Memorandum requests the Commission to recommend to the Government of India to bring Christian and Muslim Dalits under the purview of article 341 of the Constitution.

Designation of the two communities as Scheduled Caste will make them eligible for Reservation and other welfare programmes.

Meanwhile UP chapter of All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) demanded that the word "Dalit" imparts a sense of inferiority and therefore should be replaced by the word "moolniwasi". Moonniwasi which means "original inhabitants" is the appropriate word since most of the "Dalits" are the original inhabitant of India before Aryans came to India, argued BAMCEF.
