Madhu Chandra Dalit Freedom - Now and forever Abolish Caste - Now and forever Hindu Caste system is a man made tool to oppress human beings by other human being in vertical order. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ramadoss's birthday gift to Venugopal: Sack letter http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1709189.cms [ Thursday, July 06, 2006 02:21:40 amTIMES NEWS NETWORK ] NEW DELHI: A day before his 64th birthday, the director of India's premier medical institute AIIMS, Dr P Venugopal, was handed an unusual gift by health minister Dr A Ramadoss — a termination letter. This marked the end of a 47-year-long relationship between the renowned cardiac surgeon and the institute. It also marked the beginning of another angry agitation as doctors went on a flash strike at AIIMS in protest, and there are indications that it might spread to other medical colleges by Thursday. The demand for Venugopal's reinstatement and requests for the Prime Minister's intervention poured in from various medical associations. The drama leading to Venugopal's sack began on Wednesday morning when the AIIMS governing body met. Venugopal was member-secretary body and he too had come for the meeting. Ramadoss, however, asked him to wait outside — which he did for over an hour — while his fate was decided. Eventually, he was called in and handed out his termination letter. It wasn't a unanimous decision, though. At least three members — Delhi University's vice chancellor Deepak Pental, BJP leader V K Malhotra and Central Drug Research Institute chief S S Agarwal — opposed Venugopal's removal, while some of the 15 members who attended the fateful meeting admitted later that although they hadn't liked the way Ramadoss had rammed through the resolution against Venugopal, they had not spoken up. Anyway, the deed was done. The will of Ramadoss, who has had a running feud with the AIIMS director, prevailed. Venugopal was held 'guilty' of violating rule 9 of the conduct rules that prohibits a government servant from criticising the government in the media. Venugopal had, indeed, accused the ministry on June 15 of "continuous meddling with the day-to-day running of the institute" after it had unilaterally removed some key aides of Venugopal from their post. ---------------------- [2] From: EMPOWER INDIA <ttn_empower@sancharnet.in> Date: Thu Jul 6, 2006 Subject: Petition against buprenorphine as a narcotic in France Dear everybody, The French government is proposing the reclassification of buprenorphine as a narcotic in France to fight against the black market. Due to this proposal, many NGO's, clinicians and researchers are protesting to make this proposal withdrawn. The French government motivation is that such classification will reduce the black market but the government is unaware of the international consequences of such a choice. Please also circulate the letter among colleagues that might be interested in this matter. However, further studies are needed to determine if these elevated levels are a cause or effect of breast cancer. Although cadmium, a heavy metal, has been classified as a probable cancer-causing substance by the US Environmental Protection Agency, until now no human studies have investigated its link with breast cancer, Dr. Jane A. McElroy told Reuters Health. The findings from "animal studies have supported an association, and cadmium has been found in breast tissue," noted the researcher, from the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center in Madison. McElroy and her team compared urinary levels of cadmium in 246 breast cancer patients and in 254 age-matched controls. The subjects were contacted by telephone to determine the presence of known breast cancer risk factors. In the study, reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, women with cadmium levels above a certain cut-off were 2.29-times more likely to have breast cancer than those with lower levels. This held true after accounting for established risk factors. Exactly how cadmium might cause breast cancer is unclear, but there is evidence that it mimics the effects of estrogen. "It actually competes with estrogen for the alpha receptor site," McElroy said. McElroy believes that if the current findings are replicated in a larger study and cadmium's role is confirmed, it could lead to tighter restrictions on how the heavy metal is disposed of in the environment. A close look will do. The Indian Express team trekked the whole day, taking the most arduous Baltal route, to reach the holy cave and found that the lingam bore no resemblance to the natural ice formation that waxes and wanes with the cycle of the moon. ‘‘This (Shiv lingam) is not natural. The real story should now come out,’’ says president of the Purohit Sabha Mattan Pandit, A K Sidha. ‘‘Who has done it and why? There should be an inquiry.’’ The pujaris at the cave don’t mince words. ‘‘This is not the original lingam. It has been mounted here,’’ says Pandit Damodar. ‘‘They (Shrine Board) heaped a pile of snow here and used some chemicals to prevent it from melting. The pilgrims frequently ask us what this is and we are not able to give them a satisfactory answer,’’ he says. Sidha accuses the Shrine Board of creating the artificial lingam to earn revenue. ‘‘The Shrine Board looks at it from a business point of view. They want to turn a religious yatra into pilgrimage tourism,’’ he says. ‘‘Originally, the yatra used to be for one month only and it should be continued like that. It is wrong to extend it to two months.’’ On the road leading to the cave shrine, a beeline of pilgrims are waiting for their turn. Madhav Prasad of Maharashtra is returning after having a darshan of the Lingam and is disappointed. ‘‘Its (Shiv Lingam’s) shape is different this time,’’ he says. ‘‘This is my second visit here. I had earlier visited in 2002. Some people are saying this lingam is artificial. There should be a probe.’’ The controversy emerged for the first time, when the custodian of the Holy mace of Lord Shiva, Mahant Deependira Giri, at a press conference, blamed the Shrine Board of creating an unnatural lingam. The J&K Governor, Lt Gen S K Sinha (Retd), who heads the Shrine Board, has denied the allegations, saying that the lingam is natural. ---------------- [7] No reservations in pvt sector: FICCI http://www.ibnlive.com/news/no-reservations-in-pvt-sector-ficci/14756-7.html moneycontrol.com Posted Thursday , July 06, 2006 at 15:14 New Delhi: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, FICCI, does not want reservations in the private industry. It has proposed an alternative to the Finance Minister. CNBC-TV18 reports on a slice of the Finance Minister's interaction with Delhi's three industry chambers, to achieve 12 per cent annual manufacturing growth. Among the novel ideas floated at the Finance Minister's interaction with industry chambers, was FICCI's proposal for manufacturing clusters in districts dominated by dalits. There are 27 such districts in the country says FICCI, where the dalit population is 40 per cent plus. President, FICCI, Saroj Poddar said, "There is hundreds of SEZs being floated. We are saying, give the incentives to these manufacturing clusters as well, so that Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Scheduled Tribes (STs), can be employed in full swing." The industries that FICCI has identified are labour intensive ones like footwear making. It has the beauty of bringing jobs to those at the bottom of the social heap. Finance Minister, P Chidambaram said, "These labour intensive manufacturing clusters, if located in backward districts, could help employ SCs and STs and Other Backward Castes, OBCs." FICCI sure knows how to strike the right political chords. It has also proposed that it will partner the government in the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme and this will have no fiscal implications. President, FICCI, Saroj Poddar says, "We are saying, allow us to guarantee 100 days of work on a contract basis without fixed labour." The National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme is meant to alleviate hunger poverty and is confined to 150 most backward districts. FICCI's proposal is a thinly disguised attempt to get the government to revise contract labour laws. ------- |
