A special report from the Search Engine Strategies
conference, February 28-March 3, 2005, New York, NY.

Representatives from leading online measurement firms
lent new insights to questions of size and scope, as
answering behavioral questions of interest to online
marketers at "The Search Landscape" panel.

While they agreed on the high-level question of who
leads the search wars (Google), the extent of the Google
Domination Factor (a term coined by search marketer Mikkel
Svendsen) was in hot dispute. But that was far from the
only statistical trend these analysts attempted to shed
light on.

Here is a new article I have written on the popular
software Flash. I apologize for any of you who have
a flash website, but it's best you know the truth now,
before losing any more money.

***6 Reasons Why Using Flash is a BIG Mistake***


Most web designers and web design companies will try
to convince you that if you want your business to have
the best site possible that you MUST have a flash site.
Flash, for those of you who are newbies, is a software
program that can create really cool special effects and
animations. You can either have flash elements embedded
in your website or you can have your entire website done
in flash.

Now I will be the first to tell you that Flash can make
a site look pretty cool, but if you are actually trying
to make some money from your online business that using
flash is a BIG no-no. Here??™s why.

~~~ 1. Too Much Time
It takes way too much time to download an all flash website.
Even though broadband and DSL users are growing there are
still too many people that are still on dial up to rely on
using an all flash site.

Your potential customers will get ticked off at waiting an
hour to download your beautiful website and will leave to
go to the next one.

A lot of times, designers will say that they can fix the
download problem by making smaller portions or chunks of
the main site. So instead of having to wait for just one
huge file, you now have to wait for a huge file every time
you click on a button to go to another part of the site.

It does not fix the problem at all. Your customers are still
gonna get ticked after they click on your product button and
then realize they have to wait another 8 minutes to download
that page too.

~~~~ 2. Annoying Intro
I see a lot of websites that have these flash designed intros.
The concept is to have a really cool looking intro to the
company or product before launching the main website.

First of all, I have seen some really pathetic attempts at
flash intros. If you can??™t design a good one you should
definitely not try at all.

Second, most people search for the skip intro button and
just click past it anyway. Or if you don??™t have a skip intro
button, they just leave your website all together because
they don??™t want to watch your useless and annoying intro.

I know that they can be cool, that everyone seems to have one,
but unless your website is already bringing in some big time
money, then don??™t risk losing customers by using a flash intro.

There is a technique that internet marketing gurus call
"viral marketing". A good example of viral marketing is
the free web based email server Hotmail. When hotmail first
started out, they were largely unknown. How they became the
huge business they are today is through viral marketing.

Every email that was sent by someone that had a hotmail account
had a line at the bottom that asked them if they wanted a
free email account with Hotmail too. The name spread like
wildfire and now they are a huge million dollar company.

You can apply the same techniques to your own products or
expertise. A good way to get a viral marketing effect started
for your website is to either write related articles and
submit them to directories or to write a short ebook branded
with your website and contact information and give it away
for fr*ee. You can also submit it to fr*ee ebook sites and have
them give it away too.

You can potentially reach thousands of people this way and
really promote your website or product.

...But they are a proven sales tool that you I recommend

same exact thing.

So how do you create popups that aren't blockable?

Signature Files: The Easy Way To Create More Business

If you do business as an affiliate, then you're constantly
concerned with getting your name and your business
information out there. You probably send a lot of e-mails,
post on message boards, and submit articles to business
e-zines. These are great techniques for making contacts,
but are you taking full advantage of the visibility
these forums create?

One of the best ways of creating new business is to
include a Signature File with everything you post, send
or submit. What exactly is a sig file? It's that little
paragraph beneath a person's signature at the end of an
article, posting or e-mail. This is your opportunity to
let people know who you are and to direct them to your
business.

Now you may already include your url at the end of your
correspondence. That's great, but is that enough? Not quite.
Of course it's great to have your url so that anyone who's
interested in what you're saying can immediately check out
your business site, but wouldn't they be more likely to click
if you included a short description of what you do?
For example, rather than closing an e-mail or posting with:

That little extra bit could be the difference between
a trickle of new business and a flood.

It's not enough to just give an address, you've
got to give people a reason to click. You've got
to spark an interest in what you do. By creating a
short, catchy and descriptive sig file, you can
really set yourself ahead of the pack.
