EDITORIAL
September Resolutions... by Sherry D. Ramsey
(Read it online at
http://www.thescriptorium.net/editorial.html)

I know, I know. January is the traditional time for resolutions, with the start of a new year and new plans. Maybe it's because I have school-age children, but for me September always seems like the time of year for new beginnings. The frantic distractions of summer are dwindling, the air is filled with the scent of new paper and pens, crayons and backpacks, and it's time to, well, get back to work after all that summertime goofing off.

It's also a good time to look back at any resolutions or goals you may have made last January and take stock of how you're doing with them. There are still four months left in the year, lots of time to cross some things off your list if you've let them slide or have been putting them off. If you're a devotee of National Novel Writing Month (www.nanowrimo.org) you know how much can be accomplished in a single month, let alone four. And it's a good time to start setting your sights on a NaNoWriMo November if you're thinking about participating this year.

For me, it will be the first year with both my children in school, so once we all get past the trauma of the first day (or week!), I'm hoping to put in some really productive writing time. This year more than most, I feel like it's the beginning of something new.

Think about what it would take to renew your sense of writing purpose as the seasons change, and do it. Does your office or writing space need a good clean-out? Click http://mobileoffice.about.com/cs/homeoffices/qt/cleanoffice.htm. Do you need to get your writing life organized? Try http://www.organizedwriter.com/. Does your computer need some housekeeping or tweaking? Check http://smatterings.topcities.com/computer.html. Do you need to get out your old list of writing goals and update it? Click http://www.writing-world.com/basics/goals.shtml. Do you have unfinished projects languishing? You'll be surprised at the tips you'll find at http://teenwriting.about.com/library/submissions/tips/blallfinish.htm. Now is a great time to get your writing year back on track.

As for me, I'm working on clearing a few small things off my list, and then that novel rewrite is still waiting for me. So whether you're starting a new list of goals or going back to clean up an old one, I hope you'll take this chance to make a fresh start. Let's make the next few months productive ones!

Okay, everybody get to work. See you next month!
