October26, 2008 - 11 Factors to Consider Before Designing Your Website-Part 2 >> |
If you are planning to own a website now or sometimes in the future, it is important to let you know some basic factors that will help to put your organization on the right track. And if you already have a website, I also advise that you go through this article to ensure that you did not put the cart before the horse out ignorance. Since ignorance is no excuse for failure, I hereby present those 11 critical factors than can make or break you online. Factor # 1: Chose a Top Level Domain Name. One problem I have constantly faced with prospects in the past and present is in their choice of domain names. Most times they want to want to boost their ego by using a domain name that promotes their names instead of the products/services they have to offer. If you are a novice to the Internet, the question you probably will ask is, "what is a top level domain name?" Before I give you the answer, I will like us to look at the two categories of domain names listed below; Category A: Category B: Now, if you look at the web addresses at category A and B, you will notice you don?t have an idea of what those in category A do while you can easily tell what the businesses in category B do. The summary is that a top level domain is a name that instantly tells at a glance what the site does without having paid a visit to the site. Apart from the fact that top level domain names appreciate in value yearly, they are also search engine friendly. Factor # 2: Know Your Target Audience. I t is important for you to decide what your target audience will be. Is your website for teenagers, adults, children or the old? Is it for those within your locality, state or country? Are you looking at the sub-region, continent or the entire world? The answer to these questions should determine the language style for your website. The more targeted your website is, the better will be your success rate. Factor # 3: Know Your Purpose For Going Online. Though the Internet was originally designed as a media to share research freely, it has grown over the years to become the platform for virtual corporations. before designing your website, you should be able to answer the following question sincerely. Do you need a website simply because you want people to know you or your organization is existing online or you want to make money? If all you need is to boost the image of yourself or organization online, then what you need is a brochure website. On the other hand if you intend to make money online, then what you need is an ebiz website. Now let me explain further, I define a brochure website as any website that basically informs visitors about the product(s), organization and personnel without any intension to make sales. A good example of such sites are these in the Oil Industries. E.g. airyolk.com, haliburton.com etc. But an ebiz website is structured to transact businesses or e-commerce (buying and selling online) with the intention to make profit as the number reason for being on the Internet. E-biz websites can also be divided into two which are; Direct Sales Sites: Such websites are basically run by individuals who sell their products with powerful sales letters which urges their prospects to part with their money on impulse. Community websites: These are websites that primarily offer a service or group of services free to the public or a large target audience. In return they build a large list of subscribers from which they benefit from later. This could be through the sale of advertisements, products etc In most cases, It is big organizations that run such websites because of their complex infrastructures and capital intensive nature. A good example of such websites are Yahoo.com whose number one service is FR*EE email service. Factor # 4: Make Your Website Simple. A site that is heavily loaded in animations and graphics will be of great disadvantage to its owner. Do you know why? I will tell you now. Snail Speed Loading: A website very heavy in graphics will take a long time to load. You must bear in mind that visitors to your website are always impatient. And if takes more than 60 seconds (1 minute) for your page to load, the most natural thing to do will be to move to another website. That may be the last visit of such visitor unless there is something special about your website that will draw them back. Why don?t you visit http://www.fusion 101.com check out the loading time. Then you will know what I?m talking about.Animations Distracts: Before you place animation on your website, you should first ask yourself this important question, "does this animation lead to the important information or product I have to offer?" If your answer is "no!" Then forget about the animation because it won?t do you any good. It will only distract visitors from the main information you want them to read. At the long run, you won?t be making a cent. The solution is to make your WebPages simple and unique. Now if you visit http://www.google.com, you will understand what I?m trying to explain here. Factor # 5: Start A Small and Grow. I se on a regular note aspiring Netprenuer who want their websites to look like the Yahoos of this world. Yet? they don?t have the financial muscles to backup their aspirations. In most cases, such people remain stagnant without much progress. If you are serious about starting a business on the Internet, the best place to start from is with the limited capital you have on you, NOW! You can start with a mini site of two to four pages and grow as you become experienced in the game. Remember, everything in life is a growing process.
